Two questions,
1) should we go after Florence or bodden
2) when is the day we'd find out marcus Washington will get cut... Like this week or at the start of free agency??

Bodden ? I think we have more pressing needs and less money than we've had in other off seasons.
I believe it is February 26th for all clubs to be under the cap. I'm not certain. With that said we're not over the cap right now by a huge amount. If I we're the front office I wouldn't broadcast to the rest of the league that we're letting Marcus or anyone else go that's a starter. They'll then know what we intend to do in the draft and in FA.
That's just me. Some of the more knowledgable posters might have a better answer.

Makes sense to me.

So, hopefully by the end of next week we may know something about Hall's future with the Redskins:

Washington Redskins interested in keeping DeAngelo Hall - ESPN

This is good news. We should not overpay for hall, but a six year deal with about 15M garaunteed and a total value of around 45M would be very reasonable in the long-term picture. He would average less than 8M/year, and while that may seem somewhat steep now, its reasonable for a starting cornerback. I would certainly rather pay Hall 15M garaunteed for the duration of his contract than pay Springs 8M to play in 2009. We certianly cant afford to let both of them go. We have to pick one or the other, and the smart moneys on Hall.

And when you consider how new contracts for positions seem to inflate 10-20% every year, the contract would look like a real bargain in 3-4years. And with 2010 looking almost certain to be an uncapped year, i imagine we could pay him all his garaunteed money in that year, so if his play declines later on, we can cut him without paying much of a penalty. Hall also gives us another option for a chance-of-pace guy returning punts.

Lets get D Hall locked up and concentrate of finding us some solid but not too expensive FA to fortify our lines like Mark Tauscher (sp) or Stacy Andrews and another OLB like Channing Crowder.

Re: 2009 Skins Off Season Plans Ideas, Draft and FA plus cuts

I've revised my plan.

Cuts:

Marcus Washington
Shawn Springs
Phillip Daniels
Casey Rabach
Jason Taylor

None of these guys should stay except for Rabach and there will be a center in the 3rd round that can come in and start here. He might not be an immediate upgrade over rabach but hell be a lot cheaper, younger, and a change which is what our line needs.

Sign:
G Harvel Dahl - shouldn't cost a lot started for Falcons and is young.
T Stacy Andrews - guys a monster and he'll be cheaper because of injury. bengals want him back though.
DT Collin Cole - Guys young. He's big, won't be an answer but better then anything we got after Griffin.
DE - Igor Olshanksy - Guy kinda seems like phillip daniels physically and our fans love daniels I have no idea why, but we don't have many options. If Cerratto and our fans weren't retarded and didn't beg for a WR last offseason we might have actually drafted a DE and not had the whole Taylor situation. I have little faith in Cerratto, seeing as although we supposively had a more conservative approach to the offseason last year all Cerratto was doing was fishing to absolutley destroy this team which we don't have the money to do in free agency anymore so he went to trades and the draft. I still haven't forgotten the actual offer for 2 1st rounders for Chad Johnson. I though that was the dumbest thing I ever saw in my life as a Skins fan, then I saw our draft and lost all hope in our FO. Then Zorn came in and made good personnel decisions all season long so I think there's hope for us, but its all just how much of a leash Zorn can keep on Cerratto's insanity.

Draft
Pick 13 - Rey Maualuga
3rd Round - Eric Wood

The article states that the Skins is about to throw more money at D Hall, I hope not more than the Raiders or even close to it. He is a good corner but the Raiders went overboard when they reisgned him.

BigHairedAristo... is the 6 yr deal $45m total salary what the skins are thinking of offering or your opinion. I hope that is what they are looking at. If they offer around $10m a year, I think we are better served to go after Leigh Bodden, Kalvin Hayden or Dunta Robinson that will command less $$$. I don't like the idea of locking a huge part of our cap in one player when we have many holes to fill/replace in our roster.

The article stated we were going to throw more money at Hall than the raiders paid him for 8 games last year, which was 8M... obviously, if we sign Hall to an extension, it will be for more than 8M so i am not sure why Pastabelly worded it like that in his article.

the 45M total salary was my thinking... No way the skins consider offering Hall an average of 10M/year. I dont even think Clemmens got that much from the 49ers... Halls is worth 6-7M/year on average but not much more than that. We dont have a single player on our roster worth more than 8M/year, even though we are paying quite a few of our guys more than that due to restructures.

Draft
Pick 13 - Rey Maualuga
3rd Round - Eric Wood
I think Cole and Igor would be good pickups but Stacy Andrews will want more money than should spend on an older lineman with injury issues.

I also disagree with cutting Rabach this year. Rabach should be gone next year, but we arent going to find a rookie in the 3rd round who can replace him and be an upgrade in 2009. I wanted to get rid fo him this year before too, but considering all our other needs, we should really keep him around atleast one more year. Rabach is cheap enough to be worth his contract. And if he has better guards on either side of him in 2009, he should do just fine.

Under no circumstances should we take Maualuga at 13. We need to take one of the top 4 Tackles if they are still there or trade down and take an OT with our first pick. We can easily fill the LB spot vacated by Washingon with Channing Crowder out of Miami.

I also think Wood would be a good pickup in the 3rd round. If i'm not mistaken, he can play guard or center, so that would give us considerable flexibility.

Another thing ive noticed in several blogs and forums recently is that People keep talking about how we should move Jansen to guard this year if we draft a new RT... didn't we try that experiement in the past and it was a horrible failure? Just wondering because if im wrong and Jansen could be a capeable guard, it would definitely give us more flexibility with what we do in free agency and the draft.

GAUIDOMATT - are you talking about a K the skins offered hall? if so please provide a link that reported that, I would love to see it.

i dont think hall is worth anything more than 5 yrs 30 mil (10-12 mil guar.), if that IMO. i do want to re-sign hall b/c not doing so would open up another position of need on this team and without real help coming to the DL soon, we need solid cbs.

who is hall's agent? (yeah i should google it, i know sorry)

go skins!!

edit: i wish we would re-sign the ageless ray brown, man i loved seeing that guy out there. woot woot

I
Stacy Andrews is 27 and doesn't have any history of injury he's missed one game in his career and it was due to the injury he's having now.

Maualuga would give us a Ray Lewis caliber linebacker to lead our defense for the next decade. The guy is unbelievably explosive and makes game changing plays somethign our defense lacks more than even qb pressure. A tandem of Fletcher and Maualuga would give us a linebacking corps to rival teh Steelers and Ravens, both of which have incredible defenses that have started with consistently strong linebackers. Maualuga is also a great blitzing lb and will get pressure on the qb. But most importantly he'll bring the mentality that our defense lost with Sean Taylor, and is something we sorely need to bring back. This defense is solid, but it doesn't have the fight that some of the other top defenses have.
Also I still have some faith in the guy, but if you watch Rocky Mcintosh at the end of last season, he's terrible. Guys absolutley terrible, he get blocked by WRs, he misses tackles, he runs himself out of the play, he doesn't wrap up. I think it had to do with injuries and wear and tear but he's not goign to be a stud in this league ever.
Also our best acquistions have been when we don't lock in on a single need, then overpay or overdraft for a player who we belive fills that need. For example Hall, who they think is going to solve our INT turnover problem were now goign to overpay him. I think this might actually be alright because although Cerratto as always has a misguided principle this might actually work out because Hall is not terrible he's an unbeleivable corner just most teams don't want him becausehe does gamble and give up big plays. I'm sure they think Bringing in one T or a DE is going to fix our lines, but it'll be great to watch as our lines fall apart again and we have the same exact problems we did this year when our interior lines receive no upgrade and are led by guys in their late 30s who can't walk during the week.
