He's from Salisbury Md, never started less than 15 games, and has 9 solo tackles in 8 years, How does an OT get that many????

edit: he was born in Salisbury but went to high school in Lancaster, Pa.

We should sign him to a 3 yr deal and then draft Alex Mack.

Sounds like the perfect stopgap. Draft Maualuga in the first, draft a big RT in the third and plug in Schaffer at RT for the time being.

re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer

2008 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 66 | Key
Alert: None

Comment:
Shaffer was signed two years ago to be Cleveland's starting left tackle. That experiment failed and after Joe Thomas was drafted, Shaffer moved to the right side, which clearly fits him much better. Shaffer is very strong and has the size and skill set needed to best play on the right side. On the left side, his athletic ability was exposed, but he has performed admirably on the right side because he doesn't have to consistently face elite speed-rushers. Shaffer also greatly benefited from the emergence of Thomas at left tackle because the Browns are able to give him help, if he is overmanned. He isn't very nimble or fluid, but does work hard. His pad level is a problem and he lacks the ability to consistently play the game low. He is a powerful man and pushes defensive linemen backwards as a power blocker. He is a thumper who plays to the whistle and is bright enough to get the most out of his physical abilities. There isn't much upside here, but Shaffer is certainly good enough to win with, especially with an elite talent like Thomas on the other side.

His wikipedia bio looks like a winner. I would like to see him signed.

Shaffer can also provide a body at LT should Samuels get hurt.

I know he would have gotten about 6 Million if he had stayed with the Browns, I wonder what his payday will be now. Seems like a LOT of teams are vying for an OT. Maybe this can help even if we don't get him, if a team above us takes him instead of drafting an OT.

3/12 seems to be the going market rate for a starting caliber left tackle at this age.

That's pretty much what I would offer him as well.

He may be an upgrade over Jansen but I'd rather see what we have in Heyer and draft an OT in the 3rd than pay for a 29 year old tackle that already washed out at LT.

Schneed's Salary Cap projection puts the OL hit at 3.5, so we would have to work something out with him to get the deal done. Course we could release Rabach and gain 2.3 but that would mean we HAVE to do something for the Center position.

Well, maybe, but maybe he could learn from Bugel. As was mentioned in another thread, Samuels got quite the lift when Bugel trained him. Not to mention, this guy has started 15 or 16 games for the past 6 seasons, not many rookies from the 3rd round will do that this season.
