Re: The image of Redskins fans?

I think some fans are way too pessimistic about the team's situation. Granted that the occasional playoff appearance or two is not something to be super excited about, but at the same people are overdramatic when they say things like "we're a joke in the league" or "we're headed downhill" or "we have the worst owner of the league".

Here are other teams and owners that I think that fit the bill of being a joke in the league, heading downhill, and/or having terrible owners:
- Detroit Lions finishing 0-16 last year, and being a perennial loser
- Al Davis' Oakland Raiders, the whole Kiffin affair
- The Atlanta Falcons having their coach (Petrino) bail out on them after the whole Vick fiasco
- The decline of the KC Chiefs after being a perennial playoff team in the 90s.
- The Bengals becoming a haven for discipline and character issues.
- The circus known as Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys
- The decline of the San Francisco 49ers after being a powerhouse in the 90s
- And I dare to say it, the black eye that the New England Patriots will always have in sports history regarding Spygate (it's not as terrible as the other teams, but I think as a fan of the team it would suck that my team is associated with a cheating scandal).

I think some fans go too much out of their way to attack the team and the ownership, pretend like Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith were signed just yesterday, and love to praise other teams as a way to attack their own team. I know the team has made some stupid mistakes, but let's not pretend like we're the only team to do them.

Finally, in regards to the ownership and the front office, I admit that they are flawed, like everyone else. However, I do appreciate their willingness to take risks and to spend money. Sure, I would want the team to be in the NFC Championship 4 or 5 times, but ask the Iggle fans if they wish the team's ownership would spend a little bit of money to take it to the next level.

Regardless of its flaw, (and yeah I know I'm drinking the Kool-Aid here), I am glad that no one can say that the Redskins have a whole bunch of players with discipline and character issues or that they are cheaters or have an ownership that is not willing to spend/take risks in order to win. Snyder is not a clown like Jones or Al Davis, and I think it is safe to say that the last two coaches this team has had (Gibbs and Zorn) are upstanding character guys.

I agree with virtually everything you said except the Patriots/Spygate thing. It was wrong, but it was majorly overwrought by the media. It wasn't that huge of an issue until the NFL-N and ESPN got hold of it.

To the question of the OP, among my friends I am the only Redskins fan. They think we're always set up for the let down by our transactions. It's baffling to them (and us) why we aren't a juggernaut being in a major market with an owner willing to do anything. My best friend, who is a Cowboys fan that lives in DC, thinks we are way too critical of each and every thing. He often calls me about the sky falling on 980 when there is the smallest controversy.

I'm not dead but this team is dead to me...but now that McCloughan is here they may have new life!

Jay Gruden = Zorny McSpurrier
Kirk Cousins = Next Grossman

You make a good point about the Pats, but the overblown hype by the media will cause this incident to be remembered right along with the successes of the team. I guess I shouldn't have put it in the context of "bad teams", but it just sucks for NE to have that label with them.

Re: The image of Redskins fans?

I sit across three Cowboy fans and a Giant's fan. I could honestly care less how they see me. I just talk smack to them anyway. I keep my mouth shut when the Giant's girl pipes up. She's only a fan because her boyfriend is one, and she never said anything about football before the last season. I do ride her about Texaco Genius, and that cross-eyed mary they've got throwing for them. I dog the hell out of the Filth-a-delphia fan in the smoke room. She dogs Soup but I remind her, we OWN Philly.
I'm bringing a big Redskins helmet on Monday to put in the Cowpukes faces. Let them get that image.
I don't know how other fans see me but it has to be better than how they see the Filthy fans.

LMAO!

I'm not really sure about our image as a fan base. Obviously when we were turning in winning seasons every year and RFK was bouncing (literally), we probably got a lot more credit.

Snyder isn't helping our overall imagine, and the way fans of other teams find a way to infiltrate our home games doesn't help either.

But overall I'd agree with Matty. We're harder on ourselves than anyone else, and probably a fairly typical NFL fanbase these days.

No, it doesn't suck. It is not any different than when rival football fans bring up that two of our three SB wins were strike shortened seasons. It does not matter.
If Brady comes back to his normal level of play the Pats will again be one of the top teams and nobody will be talking about spygate except the fans that hate the Pats. The media and the press are done with it.It is a non-factor.
