Last I read California cannot even afford what they have going now so how could they make it on their own? I'd say California would be at the bottom of states that could sucede.

....and most Texans would prefer to stay in the Union, 75% of them in fact. That's 15 points higher than expect. Rick Perry is done for.

California would be a 3rd-world country without Federal help.

I like it here in SD, but it's too expensive. Southern SD is (chula vista and south) is almost useless though. Northern SD is extremely beautiful!

You're right about the second part though -- Lincoln made it clear that if anyone tried to leave, he'd send the army in to kill those who tried.

It's funny how Lincoln is held up as some sort of god because of this.
Sssshhhh. You can't ever talk about how the civil war and Lincoln actually destroyed what our founding fathers founded. It's not the accepted version of history.

Why is he done for? He didn't say he WANTED to secede. He said they could if they wanted to. I think he was basically just asserting the right. It's not like he started some movement to leave the Union.

I didn't say they wouldn't have to claim bankruptcy and the housing market crumble to nothing, but they have everything they need to survive otherwise. If they seceeded millions would move back to the continental US leaving all sorts of open jobs and the money problems fade away. Not saying it's a reality, but just saying Texas is a joke if they think they can survive on their own. Texans always think they are better than everyone else, and what exactly about Texas would we (the USA) miss? West Texas is COMPLETELY useless, and the coast is one of the ugliest in America (minus a few spots). The Dallas area and San Antonio area are nice, but other than that, there is nothing really concrete they offer the US. Oil you say? Well, they are not the #1 producing state of oil in the USA. Cotton would likely be our biggest hit as a nation.

For what it's worth, I believe the colonies were in financial trouble when they seceded. At least I know that during the Articles of Confederation period, paying national debts were a major stumbling block to the Articles success.
Maybe a unified California could secede, divide, secede from each other and re-join the 2 states in the US. North and South California. any takers?

LOL, I've often thought that about Texas, divide it to east texas / west texas. But then again, what does west Texas have to offer anyone? That is like the mole on texas as a whole. But I guess every state needs an imperfection right?

It's all a moot point anyways. No State has the capacity or willingness to do it. All the poll shows is that 75% of Texans polled aren't complete dolts who think they can survive a global economy and massive geopolitical forces working against every country in the world nowadays.

I believe all this talk is to shore up his "conservative" creds. Hutchinson can flip the scripts on his ass and claim "we're Americans, and always will be. Secession talk irresponsible and if we want to take back our country we should elect officials such as myself to represent you at home and in Washington."

I agree. I just don't think he is done. It actually makes me laugh how we have politicians coming out of the woodwork talking about how bad politicians are. The irony is thick. I feel like telling Perry, "Hey I agree you should have the right to leave if you want. Other than that you are a douche just like every other politician in this country. A squirrel trying to get a nut."

I am wary of politicians (basically all of them) who all of a sudden have things to say. Especially things that magically resonate with current political undertones. Funny how that happens.

I believe in being classy and leaving somethings unsaid for nothing good would come of them. One shouldn't for example bring up how you tea-bagged your wife the night before at a formal dinner in front of guests.
