Re: Do You Draft for Need or Best Player Available?
All I know is we have to draft Toby Gerhart from Stanford somehow, this guy is an animal. They are 1/2 way through the 2nd quarter and he has 90 yards and 2 td's against Oregon, that's 15 td's so far this year in the Pac10.
Update* 38 Rush, 222 yds 3 TDs beating Oregon, the team that kicked USC's butt last week 51-42.

He was awesome today, he was exhausted by the end of the game. What I like about this guy is that he is humble and has a huge heart, a true warrior, he would a step in the right direction.

You draft offensive linemen, the more the merrier.

Do You Draft for Need or Best Player Available?
Take a look at this team's record and the answer should be apparent to anyone with half a brain. You draft the best player available of course, IE: CBs, WRs, and TE / FBs. Sheeyut! Everyone knows that!

Re: Do You Draft for Need or Best Player Available?
obviously i think we need to draft a LT, that happens to be our biggest need as well. I do believe given our organization and where it stands as far as being competative, that we need to draft for need. Now, if we are Philly, NE, Indy they have the luxory of drafting the best player available.

Re: Do You Draft for Need or Best Player Available?
I've always been a fan of drafting the best player available. Obviously, this only works if you have a good scouting staff. Saying, "drafting the best player available is a bad idea because the Lions drafted 4 wide receivers and are awful" doesn't make sense to me. Other teams draft the best player available and do well. New England and Indy have done it and it worked out for them.
Pretty much the only position I would oppose drafting the best player available, is the quarterback in the first few rounds, if you already have an above average quarterback. I only oppose that in the first couple rounds, since injuries will always happen and you never have 2 quarterbacks on the field at the same time(99% of the time) and the team might get no value from the high draft pick. Free agency is where you go to fill needs. There are usually serviceable players in each free agency. Last year we got Derrick Dockery back, who is a capable left guard in the NFL. Every year's class of free agents won't necessarily be available to fill all your needs, but it's impossible to have pro bowlers at every position. That's why I would love to see the Redskins actually draft whoever they think is best, especially in the first round. Eric Berry will probably be available at pick number four and if Berry is a bust and Landry continues playing the way he does, we could become the next lions by drafting 3 safeties in 6 years and be an awful team. But, if Berry plays like Reed, we could have a top 5 defense and a very good chance of making the playoffs. Everything in the draft is a gamble, so I'd rather take a gamble on whatever has the best chance to succeed. Man, how do you people write posts longer than this one?

Re: Do You Draft for Need or Best Player Available?
As is with everything these days hybrid is the way to go. I think the smarter GM's put together a draft board based on pure talent. Like how go so and so is a tackle compared to how good of a cornerback another guy is. Basically grades that translate across position. If you have a position of need and the grade is only so many points below the true best player available you draft the guy for need.
I think Bruce Allen put it best. "We're going to draft the best player for the Redskins." Is that the best player available? "Usually it's the best player available."
