This is simply not about losing to get better draft positioning in the upcoming offseason - we are not just one player or one draft from turning things around - we are likely 3 full drafts from turning the corner and building a true foundation and injecting the team with much needed youth in all reality. I hate this because lets be honest - we always seem to be rebuilding in the offseason - but if we are to ever truely turn the corner we need to flush the entire system down the drain from top to bottom - and 2-14 justifies that a lot more than 7-9.
I agree, we get a top draft pick we could trade down, get maybe two first round lower picks, a some great 2nds, our team will be a better team, with the pieces we have........ i trade this year, for a great one next year.

Re: Why we need to rout for 2-14

The worst thing about us going 2-14 this year is the fact that we're going 2-14 before we blow everything up and bring in new management, coaches, players...etc. So, after reading Smootsmack's thread on "Getting to know the Redskins' Front Office" I imagine that once we do blow up everything, we might as well expect another few win season next year unless the stars happen to align just nicely for us. I don't mind a 2-14 season when it's because the team is young and still trying to build and grow.

I just imagine despite whatever top draft picks we do get, it's going to be a long haul for us to get back to where we're all hoping the Redskins will be in a few years.

Thumbs down Re: Why we need to rout for 2-14

The franchise has never lost more than 12 games in a single season. Worst season record was 1-12-1 in '61.

I would be fine if they did what the Caps did when they came out and said 'we're basically going to blow this team up, you're not going to like it but we'll be better off in the long run.' Thanks to good draft position they were able to select Backstrom, Ovechkin, Semin, and Alzner. A group that will eventually come full cirlcle and provide the foundation for the team along with other young players who were selected later in the early part of the draft like Varly, Carlson, and Green. On top of that they have seemingly random players that constantly step up, Flash comes to mind as of late. To me their success is attributed to a quality front office, not just the fact that they got lucky enough to select Ovechkin.

At the same time I'm scared that we could end up like the 49ers did under Mike Nolan. During that time they did all the right things including drafting young players, getting rid of Vinny, and cutting aging high priced veterans. Thats why I believe having quality talent elevaluators is easily the most important part of building a team.

Cerrato is mediocre at best, sure he can select a few good players, but at the same time he obviously has little idea, if any, as to how to build a team over the long haul opting for a "one player away approach, as I avoid adding quality prospects along the O-Line."

Adding Gibbs might be a nice touch but I'm convinced that he's only a great coach. I say this because despite a structure that wasn't the best at selecting talent, he was still able to lead the team to the playoffs twice in two years, and during that last run they seemed poised to take a run at the title, or as my Dad put it "no one wants to play them." Since Gibbs has left the team has lost the discipline and focus it had under his direction, which has resulted in the roster being exposed.

If I was in charge I would seriously consider cutting loose many of the high priced veterans during the uncapped year including Portis, Rabach, Griffin, ARE, DeAngelo Hall, I'd also be tempted to cut Andre Carter after this year. Fletcher can't be cut in my view because he's to much of a leader, playmaker, and overall high character player. Haynesworth has simply been dominant and will hopefully last and play hard enough to oversee a rebuilding effort.
