i.e. in this draft you might get a starting back in the 3rd or 4th round or beyond. So I find it hard to fathom that anyone would trade a pick for CP w/his age, salary & other issues. I would expect Shanny is weighing these options too. The main reasons CP might stay are salary & the team has too many needs to draft a rb to replace him. (I do foresee a rb taken in the draft, just not sure he'll be an every down guy)
are you also saying that McKnight is a late round gem, because I see him being taken in the 3rd round.

Personally, I don't want to see Portis break Riggins' record. Riggins was a team player, and he was somebody you could root for. But Riggins doens't like Snyder and Snyder doesn't like him. So if Clinton comes back to break the record, then look for trouble from him. Of course Clinton might be reading some of these comments about him and he may change because of them. But I still don't want him, even for a second of a game.

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

If Clinton commits to the offseason program...I absolutely want him back next year. Best blocking back in the league with HOF potential (although in the twilight years of his career). He's an ass and, for some, uncoachable but I love him in the B & G.

BTW- Who was Joe Jackson Gibbs' favorite player? Did Joe ever complainf about CP?

Also- Riggins was an AWESOME player...but not well known for his practice habits! Need I remind you of the beer shed?

If CP commits to the new regime under Mike Shanahan...then he'll have another 1500 yard season!!!

Quote from Stump Mitchell:

"But I want to see Clinton accomplish everything he possibly can accomplish. I love him as a person. He's been nothing been nothing but respectful toward me. Clinton can carry a football team, I know that for a fact."

That says alot to me about CP's character and his potential when motivated!

Right when motivated..which is why I want to keep CP around a little longer. Let's see if Shanny can correct his behavior

At least everybody is questioning his motivation. Why wouldn't you be motivated to know that you are going to get the money no matter how much you suck?

They should re-do his deal to make him EARN his money. Then he'll refuse, Shanahan will cut him, and we will move on...

... And he will still get paid. He's guaranteed something like $7M so he has no incentive at all to do a new deal, unless you want to give him more $$ but that's just insane. So you either cut him and get nothing, or you try to whip his ass into shape and get something in return for the money.

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

interesting comment about Portis' contract as it relates to the capless year and a new CBA instituted after that from someone by the name of Spear on extremeskins:

Quote:
No. No. No. I don't know why I have to keep explaining this. The dead money will not -- can not -- carry over to a new CBA. The uncapped year wipes the slate clean. So, if there is nothing to accelerate, there is no cap hit associated with releasing anyone signed prior to the next CBA, unless they have roster bonuses or guaranteed salary scheduled during newly capped seasons. Bottom line: it does not make a difference whether we cut him before or after the next CBA. His inflated cap number dies in March and will not be magically resurrected.

Also, Portis' base salary IS guaranteed for 2010.
Does anyone know if the part in italics is true or not? If its true, then there really is no benefit of releasing a player in 2010 based soley on your desire to be rid of an inflated contract.

It's true, but there are going to be standardized restrictions on dumping large contracts this offseason. So perhaps if we are allowed to take Randy Thomas or Chris Samuels off the books this offseason, they won't allow us to release Portis and/or Moss as well. There really hasn't been much written about this, except that there will be restrictions. There will also be loopholes, I'm guessing.

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

I've taken a 180 degree turn on this. I say keep Portis, Campbell AND even Rock. I like Rock catching passes out of the backfield. Get another back and use him and Portis interchangeably, similar to the how the Panthers, Cardinals, Ravens and others utilize their backs.

Keep Campbell, but don't take drafting a QB with the 4th pick off the table. If Shanny determines that one the QBs available is a potential all time great, go for it. If not, draft the best O linemen we can get or trade down. Definitely trade Cooley. Get O linemen and a good Free Safety by any means.

Getting a good Free Safety is a 2 for 1 pick-up, since we can move Landry back to Strong Safety.

Presto Chango, we're in the playoffs in 2011... next year's schedule it brutal.

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

What back would we get that would be an upgrade over CP (a potential HOF)?

BTW- We are not drafting one in the first few rounds when we need OL, QB, CB and FS more pressingly!

The real question is who would you rather keep Portis or Betts?
