One was being made at a birthday party for a friend, the other was about the President of the United States. You're right they are different.

If the Dems have standards, Reid will be forced to resign like Lott. He's going to lose his election huge anyways, but why keep him until then?

Much ado about nothing. I didn't find it offensive at all...he in fact spoke the truth and seeing he was an early supporter of Obama and encouraged him to run he gets a pass. Now if he was an Obama hater like Bill Clinton and said "a few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee," it's a different story. No Bill, some of us aren't wait staff you can send on coffee runs for you. I guess Bill forgot he was a redneck hick from Arkan'saw not too long ago.

Here's the difference: Harry Reid was making an honest attempt to praise Barack Obama, a person he thought could win the presidency, as a crossover candidate with appeal. While Reid's observation was dead on and accurate, in my opinion, his choice of words were poorly chosen and ill conceived.

Trent Lott on the other hand supported Strom Thurmond, a segrationist candidate who thought America would be a better place without blacks, has all sorts of negative implications for the country and particularly African-Americans. Trent Lott openly mused about the possibility of Thurmond's presidency being good for America. Completely different context.
