I don't necessarily think Smith is a bust nor is Davis any way dependent on Smith to be successful, but as long as teams are going to back their evaluations on these "character issue" types with their dollar, I'd really like to see it pay off for someone first. I wouldn't be unhappy with any of the above, but ultimately, when you are trying to improve a team, you do that by grabbing the best player you can get who won't be blocked by a veteran. Any situation where we land Okung, it'd be tough to argue that we didn't get the best player available. But going further on down that list, we might then be passing up steals to address an obvious need. Okung is the offensive Suh in this draft, but there is no Gerald McCoy comparable. The next best offensive player is probably Spiller.
