Controversy with Eagles

During his weekly Philadelphia sports radio show on WIP (AM) prior to the game against the Dallas Cowboys, Owens stated if he could return to the 2004 off-season he would not have signed with the Eagles. After the Dallas game, in which the Eagles were badly beaten, Owens was seen by Philadelphia Daily News reporters wearing a Michael Irvin throwback football jersey on the way to the Eagles airplane flight. Irvin was a hall-of-fame wide receiver for the Cowboys during the '90s when the Cowboys-Eagles rivalry was perhaps the most intense.

As a result, Owens's appearance in the jersey was seen as provocative in the Philadelphia press and by many fans. According to sources and Andy Reid's post-game press conference, none of Owens's teammates or coaches challenged him. The following Friday, on Owens's radio show, he stated he did not care what the fans thought of him wearing the jersey and that he would wear what he chooses. It is well known that Owens and Irvin are good friends.

On November 3, 2005, Hugh Douglas, former Philadelphia Eagles Defensive End, acting as an ambassador for team management, started to have an argument with Owens in front of the team in the locker room before practice. Soon, this led to a short fight between the two.[22]

That afternoon Owens made a number of controversial statements during an ESPN interview. In the interview, Owens voiced his frustrations of the Eagles not recognizing his 100th career TD. He referred to the Eagles as a classless organization for the way they behaved. The Eagles have since stated that the Club does not recognize individual achievements.

When asked whether or not he agreed with a comment made by ESPN analyst and good friend Michael Irvin, Owens agreed to the statement, saying that he thought the Eagles would be undefeated if Brett Favre were on the team instead of Donovan McNabb. Owens went on to expand on the point, calling Brett Favre a warrior. Many people took offense at this, since it appeared as though Owens was claiming that McNabb, who was playing with a sports hernia among other injuries, was not a warrior. This interview effectively ended Owens's career in Philadelphia.

During his weekly news conference the following day, Eagles head coach Andy Reid said that Owens had been suspended for four games—starting with the 17-10 loss to the Washington Redskins on November 6—for conduct detrimental to the team. The four games represented the maximum amount of time that a player could be suspended without pay for such conduct under NFL rules. After Owens served his suspension, the Eagles deactivated him from their roster for the remainder of the season, so that they wouldn't be forced to release him and let him sign on with another team.[23]

On November 8, Terrell Owens and his agent Drew Rosenhaus held a news conference at Owens's Moorestown, New Jersey residence. Terrell apologized to the team (including Donovan McNabb) and the fans. After Owens read his statement, Rosenhaus answered questions from reporters. However, Rosenhaus answered many questions, such as "What have you done for T.O. besides get him suspended?" with a "next question." He blamed the media for Owens's current employment status. In his autobiography, "T.O.", Owens did state that most of the apology was forced upon him and not sincere.

On the grounds that deactivation cannot be used as a means of punishment, the NFLPA and Owens appealed the Eagles punishment to an arbitrator. On November 23, 2005, Terrell Owens's season was effectively ended after arbitrator Richard Bloch ruled that the Eagles were justified in suspending him for four games and that they did not have to activate him after the suspension (the Eagles would deactivate him game by game, with pay, for the final five games of the season, but that so long as he was paid, he was not technically suspended). The NFLPA subsequently said they would make sure Bloch never arbitrated with them again.

But as a point T.O.'s attitude was not that bad in Dallas either. He did what he was supposed to do and kept his mouth shut. In the end he got traded. The big question is how was he a problem there? In Buffalo he knew it was about showing he could be a team player. Again he kept his mouth shut and played the game. Even when the HC pretty much didn't utilize him during half the season. Plus he still kept his mouth shut.

I'd say I think it's obvious if we can't pick up Marshell (which I don't know how we could) then yes to T.O. If some rumors are correct that AH is being offered in a trade for Marshell then lets see what happens but I just don't see it happening. T.O. is going to be cheaper but I think he is looking for either a 2 or 3 yr deal making about 6 mill a yr. I would offer a 2 yr deal (with an out if he becomes a problem) worht about 4 or 5 mill.

I honestly believe T.O. knows his window of opportunity for a Super Bowl Ring is closing maybe not by choice but by force (age). I think he wants a ring more than stats now and I also think we give him the best option to win a Super Bowl. He wants to be a HOF one day so being a team player and cleaning up his image is priority. What better way to clean up his image than getting back with the individual you ultimately fell out with and try another Super Bowl run.

I don't know if I should respond to this thread. If people think T.O. will be the best receiver ever, there's nothing i can do.

I think it's hilarious that the only QB's that he DIDN'T cause problems for was Steve Young and Trent Edwards and that was only because he couldn't argue about not getting the ball enough when Jerry Rice was on the team and with Trent he just wanted a chance to keep his job as he got older.

He threw Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb, Drew Bledsoe, and Tony Romo under the bus and threw hissy fits and so forth, but each time he moved everyone thought, "Oh, well that won't happen here!" then looked all surprised when it did.

But hey, Nobody likes when i bring up the past, so...

I feel ya but like I said I honestly believe T.O. window of opportunity for a Super Bowl Ring is closing due to his age. In 2004, the Eagles Super Bowl run he was 30 now he is 36 big difference not too many more chances if you ask me.

It's a tough argument. I mean... if you look at his stats, unlick Donovan or Jason or Santana... the man's numbers are just so constant. if you jsut look at the numbers, the man is amazing!

My biggest issue for him is this... it's not how many catches you make, it's if you make the catches that count! As a Redskins fan i'm sure you remember games where Shawn Springs made him a non factor, but you also remember the games where we only won because he dropped crucial passes on 3rd down. If you make 15 catches for 150 yards, but drop the 10 yarder needed to stay in or win the game, the other catches just don't seem to matter.

36 is ancient for a reciever you know. even the original "Over the hill gang" would be like "Yeah, he's a little old"

Any other day I would agree with you. In the past I have argued against picking him up. But as someone else said I think he's wanting a ring now or atleast for the past 4 yrs. He's pretty much been a model player. Done what was asked of him.

I can't imagine any player not getting the recognition they deserve. Could you guys see Art Monk making mile stones in his career and the Redskins simply over looking it? Not making a big deal out of it? Not posting it on the jumbo tron? I could see why T.O. would be pissed off. So in turn he wears a jersey just to piss off management, the HC, fellow players, and the fans. What better way to get back at all of them then to wear you best friends jersey?

I'm not saying it wouldn't make waves here either since it's a Dallas jersey, but any other jersey of a player who did well and made it in the HOF would you care or would you look at it as a respect thing? T.O. did it on purpose cause of the classless place Philli is. Hell they practically strip searched a female going through the airport cause she was wearing a Dallas jersey, then commented to her asking how it felt wearing a Dallas jersey in Philli....after the search.

I still like this idea we definitly would be SB contenders then or close to it. If nothing else it would make for a nice nightmare for other teams to have to cover.

As for Springs you know him & T.O. are best friends they actually train together in the offseason. Springs has said before we know each other in and out but i have one up on T.O. I am concerned about him not holding onto the ball at critical times as well.

If you honestly felt that we were one chess piece away from having a super bowl contender, then I would maybe consider picking up TO.

The problem is we are SOOO far away from being a contender at this point, why bother with an over the hill attitude problem like TO. If you look at our current receivers, there is a lot of young up-and-coming talent there in Mitchell, Thomas, and Kelly. Receiver is not our biggest issue IMO, and wasting the time and energy in managing a known locker room cancer like TO is the LAST thing this team needs to distract it.

Boswell said it well in his piece from the Post yesterday, the skins finally have a qb that will allow them to evaluate their receiver talent. We'll know quickly if we have play-makers or bums when #5 tattoo's their chest 30 yards down field. At least wait for a couple of mini-camps to let the coaching staff make their evaluations before going him.

Ive been pulling for the Skins to go after T.O. or Brandon Marshall since our season ended. ONE MORE STUD WR and some additions to our O-line and our offense is SET.

Yeah, but at the same time we still need depth at the WR position. We still need to fill Randel Els spot. The NFL season is long for the players that participate in. Plus, having TO (or any other stud WR) will force teams to focus on them and open up more opportunities for our up in coming WRs. Let them get some big passes, make plays, get their swagger up. DT and MK will be seeing significant playing time regardless.
