I guess the only thing I imagine as to why Mawae hasn't been picked up is maybe because he doesn't fit MS' locking scheme?
I don't know how well he cuts but he's from a ZBS and can get upfield quite well. There's a vid of a Chris Johnson run where Mawae and another lineman are still trucking 30 yards past the line of scrimmage. I know that you can't base everything on one play, but it just shows that he's got the motor still.
