I'm trying to understand the rationale behind the trade. We trade a player that probably wasn't going to make the team for another whose situation would appear to be simular at best. Is the plan for him the PS?

I'm thinking, if a guy isn't worthy of a roster spot they wanted to get him out and get another guy in, because why waste time? They don't want Colt -- probably don't want Beck either -- but they've gotta find out.

I think he has too much accrued time to land on an NFL practice squad.

Beck has a greater than zero chance of being the no. 2 QB this year, which I believe is the rational behind the trade. I'll bet trade talks started between the Ravens and the Redskins on the topic of their CB depth, and that we tried to get a draft pick out of them, but couldn't. Doug Dutch wasn't going to make our team, and Beck wasn't going to make theirs (unless Troy Smith was traded), so the ability to look at John Beck in the preseason seems like a no-brainer.

In all likelyhood, he's going to get released before the season. He'd have to beat out Grossman for a roster spot, and there's enough evidence out there to think that Rex is just better. But with this trade, Shanahan can make the decision for himself.

Colt was to some extent a fan favorite. With Grossman entrenched as the #2 QB Shanahan won't have to worry about the fans calling for Colt in the event Grossman has to play and does not do well. Colt threw his worst passes of the summer with Shanahan watching closely.

The Ravens desperately need help in their secondary, Dutch is a far cry from being any form of an answer. Fred Smoot is still out there, maybe they should ring him up.
