If the contract is that big his mentor Michael Vick loves him even more today because it drives his stock up even higher.

I like it, allows us to bring in a QB & groom him on the bench for a few years. Next year we pick up a big time free agent WR IMO.

Re: Redskins and McNabb Agree to Contract Extension

I like the move. Not worrying too much about the money, it's nice that we have essentially guaranteed that McNabb is going to retire as a skin. I wouldn't really want many other QBs in the league to tutor whoever we draft to be our next young QB.

I don't understand how people can be upset about this. If you don't resign him, you waste two draft picks and are stuck with either sexy rex or a rookie. How is that better? Signing him for five years isn't guaranteeing that he'll start until his contract is up.

Besides, tonight he's going to have a great game. McNabb always plays well after a benching or a bye, and this week he has both. I expect big things tonight, and not because of the payday.

Exactly...

The deal contains $20 million guaranteed, including a $7 million signing bonus, virtually all of Cutler's first-year salary, and $3.3 million of his 2010 base pay. Cutler can earn $500,000 workout bonuses in each year 2010-2013. 2009: $10.035 million (+ $100,000 workout bonus), 2010: $7.5 million, 2011: $8.1 million, 2012: $8.2 million, 2013: $8.9 million, 2014: Free Agent. Cap charge: $11.435 million (2009).
It's doubtful McNabb could have gotten a deal of this magnitude anywhere else in the league, certainly not in Philly.

Re: Redskins and McNabb Agree to Contract Extension

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. It's just insanity.

I mean, how much money are they planning to eat on the back end? McNabb obviously won't be in Washington in 2014, and it's not uncommon to completely backload a deal thats simply designed to keep him off the open market until it sets itself after the next CBA is done.

It's worth pointing out that McNabb's job security is a week to week deal. But his financial security basically makes his roster spot safe through 2012. Which greatly undermines anything either Shanahan would try to do to improve him as a player.

It's insane how easy this organization throws around it's money. The redeeming grace of this deal is that we've seen that no amount of financial security is going to affect Shanahan's QB plan for the future.

Where the heck can we find a franchise quarterback under these conditions?

Man dammed if you do dammed if you don't. The Skins finally make a great move for the future on a future Hall of Fame quarterback whom has plenty of tread left on the tires and people are still bitching. The Redskins will be a contender for years to come now that we have him signed. Kudos to Bruce Allen for making this happen. Now its time to wipe the floor with the Eagles tonight!!!

Pssh, you should see my facebook news feed page. A bunch of people bitching about the McNabb signing.

It could be worse people... We could be the Cowboys.

I hope Donovan doesn't spend any money on jewelry like Dez Bryant

This is spot on. So long as we don't end up in "cap hell" (which, according to all the pundits, we've been in for years), what difference does the cost make?

My guess is you bring in a serious young prospect or two over the next few years, groom em behind DMac, and then keep DMac as a vet backup. Now, if DMac suddenly gets hot, he'll get his incentive money. If not, it's stability until the true savior arrives. We've still got a ton of team to build before we're going anywhere, IMO. This locks in one piece, and it shuts down all the gossip for a while. I'm fine with the move, even at 80 mill.

Now, if we re-sign captain Rabach for big money...

Good move, this should shut the media up about this whole 'Donovan won't be in DC next year"
