Give it up for Heyer!
The guy is much maligned and deservedly so at times, but I thought he did a great job yesterday stepping in at guard. Kudos to the entire patchwork OL in fact. Just an amazing job under the circumstances.

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
Hey honestly he looked pretty good at Guard. I know it was only one game but once Rabach went out and Heyer went in they were still getting a nice push. At teh Tackle position he is a liability but maybe ge can find a home at Guard ?

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
I've always thought he could probably be serviceable at guard. I've felt that maybe he didn't have quick enough feet to kick out on some pass rushers, but once he gets his hands on a rusher, he does a pretty good job. I hope he gets an extended look at guard to see if he can be a contributor at that position.

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
Id say start that entire group together next weekend. Titans D-line is very solid. Heyer played extremely well. Montgomery at Center I thought was just as impressive.

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
Even though Rabach is an open door most of the time I was concerned when he went out but Montgomery held his own. I was shocked at the push that the line started to get as the game went on. McNabb didn't have an infinite amount of space in the pocket but for the most part there was one. Good running lanes, it was just a good game played by the team.

I think yesterday showed why Mike Shanahan has always been so insistent that his linemen be versatile

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
Yesterday's offensive line was just a little sneak peak at what this group can do when we play the best players we have.
I don't know yet if Heyer actually played well at RG or merely well considering the circumstances, but the OL performance was excellent in this game.

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
I've picked on Heyer from the beginning. He's been pretty bad consistently for years. Yesterday he was very good. Good job Heyer.

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
Well, in Shanny's system he wants a quick, athletic line, Heyer's problem (as I understand) is knee bend not so much quickness. Who knows? Maybe he stays at guard for a bit? Would love for him to make it.

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
I said in another thread and I'll say it here Casey Rabaach has been our worst lineman for the past 3 seasons and I was happy to see another face at center. I honestly think things got incrementally better with him out of the lineup.

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
The patchwork OL we ended up playing was the best we had. McNabb had more time the normal, and more running lanes got opened then usual. I would like to see the same OL the rest of the season.
In regards to Heyer, he shocked me, I thought he was a waste of a roster spot, but he proved me wrong, and I am glad about that. |

Re: Give it up for Heyer!
The inherent advantage in putting Heyer at guard could be that he's right next to the center, which could help to limit his chronic false starts. He's an above average NFL tackle after the snap, but if you play him for 70 snaps, you're certain to get at least three false starts.

I would also guess that he's not strong enough ideally to play guard & w/his problems in getting his center of gravity lower, it would seem he'd get mauled by strong, quick DTs & NGs the way Rabach does. |
