Re: Cerrato on Zorn

Vinny hired Zorn. Zorn's a nice guy, but that hire was one of the worst hires possible. Vinnie couldn't hire anyone else, b/c anyone else didn't want to work w/ Vinny. Yes, go away Vinnie, we'd rather not hear your name ever again.

Zorn was a desperation hire. Several candidates who were interviewed by the Redskins, and felt to be a "Sure fire" head-coach, were not hired because the prospective coaches had big disagreements on philosophy, and roster/staff.

One such prospect, former NYG Head Coach Jim Fassel, quite plainly said after his interviews fell through, that he intended to change/reshape the roster, specifically at QB, as he felt that Campbell was not an NFL starter. He also wanted players to earn spots through training camp, something that has been long forgotten at Redskins park, as the contracts dictate who starts.

Gregg Williams was another guy who said similar things. The feeling these guys gave us was that the Skins Front Office wanted a coach who would just coach what was given to him. In other words, his roster, coaching staff, and other stuff was already assigned. And for obvious reasons no competent Head Coach would agree to that. So Zorn, who was originally supposed to be an OC, was hired as HC after their other choices fell through.

There were numerous articles stating the above, people can look them up at will. And Jim Fassell was the most outspoken of how asinine the interviews were, where he basically kept telling them that he wanted to make changes to the roster and assemble his own staff.....

We should've and could've hired Greg Williams, Gibbs had a little momentum going he would've built off of. Could have left Al as OC and kept building.

Agreed, I was eager to see GW get his 2nd chance as a HC. He was in an ideal position in some respects, he'd earned the respect of Gibbs & players rallied around him, especially after ST's death. Leaving AS in place would've given him the magic 3 years at least to show how the O could do. Would've also given JC a chance to show what he could do w/the same OC.

Exactly...and thinking back this is exactly what about 98% of the fan base wanted while dumb and dumber were fumbling around with Fassel & Zorn.

It was really the craziest fiasco coaching search ever I think. Then, the ending...Zorn. Thud.

I don't know how they could go w/ Zorn over GW. Unbelieveable.

Thats a GREAT point. Cerrato throwing out all of this crap about Zorn's ego, when the main reason he got rid of GW was because he knew that GW wouldn't let him run the show unchallenged (3 Pass Catchers *cough*) and on the flip side brought in Zorn because he thought he could control him. Same holds true apparently for why he didn't bring in Fassel. Cerrato was so egotistical that rather then hire a real head coach that might threaten his authority he promoted an offensive coordinator that wasn't even close to ready to run a football team.

The yes man, wanted his own yes man.

On top of that he's terrible with the media and his one real accomplishment in the world of football aside from stealing a couple mil from Redskin fans is that he "convinced" kids in the 80's to attend Notre freaking Dame. Which back then was about as difficult as convincing little kids to eat candy.

Greg Williams deserved to be the head coach here. 3 out of the 4 years he was here, he fielded top 10 defenses with a little above average talent. Vinny is a weak thin skinned clown and you were dead on as to why he wasn't hired. Vinny remembered what happened to him the last time a strong willed coach was hired. Williams went on to win a SB with New Orleans while Vinny's fate was sealed with the Zorn hire.

“We tried to help him, and he wouldn’t listen,” Cerrato said of Zorn.

I was too. I mentioned though, i think the reason GW didn't get the gig was the fact that he probably didn't take any sh** from Vinnie and Vinnie didn't like that. GW probably wanted more control than Vinnie was willing to give him.

So, Vinnie hired, then unhired Jim Fassell, then hired Zorn.

The bolded part would have never happened with Williams as head coach.

Gibbs Leaves Future Open - washingtonpost.com

Gibbs also left open the idea of a quarterback competition between Jason Campbell and Todd Collins -- comments that sent shock waves among many veterans who believe that decision could stunt Campbell's development -- and said that he definitely wants Collins, a potential free agent, back.
I assure you, that Gibbs and Williams were on the same page when it came to Jason Campbell. You want to know why Gregg Williams didn't get the job really? It's because Vinny and Snyder wanted JC the unquestioned starter because of all that was invested in him, and hence some of the clashes with Williams/Cerrato and why other coaches declined the job.

There is a insider on another forum and here was what he had to say about the situation.

Quote:
no that is not speculating. Williams during his interviews was on the same page as Gibbs was actually. Williams was going to keep Saunders and give him 100% control of the offense and there was going to be a open competion for the starters job in camp but Williams leant toward Collins because he made the overall team more effective. Campbell vs Collins was a issue as some felt Campbell was a franchise QB that just needed proper grooming. Williams wouldn't guarantee Campbell the starter for this season and people didn't like that. Why do you think the first thing Zorn said after his maroon and black comment was Campbell is my Unquestioned starter during his press conference

I always knew that Vinny and Dan had to press the JC starting issue for a QB minded coach to come in and name JC the unquestioned starter without reviewing tape or seeing any of them in practice. Notice Shanny didn't do this.

Glad my comment drew some reaction! Still, if GW was hired JC would've been in "open competition" for the job. Moreso, Al Saunders deserved that next year after getting Collins to move the team in that late 07 run. I would've loved to see how that would've played out.

Ironic that a year later the danny was looking to replace JC at every turn.

Dude you are spot on. This is the most telling story right there. When i was still a member at extreme-skins, this was the general consensus there too. Snyder and Cerrato wanted JC to be the unquestioned starter no matter what, and all of their coach interviewees wanted guys to challenge for the position. Jim Fassell for sure did, as he straight up said it in interviews that he did not think Jason Campbell was an NFL Starter. Williams would have went with Collins, no brainer there. Zorn was the only guy who said "ok, you can pick my players for me, i will have no say in the roster"...a spineless move but maybe he felt he could win with them, i dunno.
