I'll say it again, I think something happened after Gibbs and after Turner or late Turner. I think DG learned that people were taking items he signed and were selling them on E-Bay or somewhere and he got all upset. See DG comes from an era when players gave up their rights to their names on merchandise so the only extra money the players got came from commercial deals and signing autographs. Here he is signing autographs and not getting paid for it and the public goes out and sells the signature on e-bay. He got all upset if I recall correctly and refused to sign anything after.

I don't know him personally, never met him face to face, but I really don't recall any of the other players bad mouthing him either.
Here's what I said a few years back here, based on my personal experience.

Let me just say first that I think Darrell Green is one of the greatest players in Redskins (if not) NFL history and he brought all of us Redskins fans many great memories and DG the player is a huge, huge reason that I became a Redskins fan. I will always appreciate what he did for us on the field

However, I've never been so let down when I met him, and maybe it was because I had him on such a high pedestal. But anyway, as I've mentioned here before I used to work for a tv station in the DC area. So anyway, when I first joined the station I was told that Darrell Green had an unwritten rule-all interviews with and profiles on him must include at least 30 seconds of talk about his charity, and anytime we interviewed another player about his charity work we had to also talk about Green's charity work. Technically it couldn't be enforced but, as everyone knows, the news biz can often be "rub my back, I'll rub yours", and the last thing anyone in the DC news biz wants to do is get on the Redskins bad side. So anyway, I wanted to do a story about another player's charity work on Thanksgiving. Everything was in place and then we got a call from the Redskins "This doesn't air unless you profile Darrell Green's charity work as well" It never aired. There was just no time to do both, 30 seconds is a long time in the tv world. There were a lot of players who did charity work that no one ever knew about for that reason. This is one of the reasons he was resented in the locker room. Everyone loved and appreciated the player, but there were times when (as I was told by some players) they thought "why does he feel that he can be the only good guy in the locker room." His charity work was and still is incredible, and I appreciate his interest in giving it exposure but it came across much more like "Look at all the charity work I'm doing" than just "look at this charity"

Another time Darrell Green was in our studio and one of my co-workers came in to the studio with his 6-year old grandson and asked Green if he would sign his grandson's football. Darrell said "No, what's in it for me?" So I was there and said "the satisfaction of making a young kid happy" And he actually said "that's not good enough". And walked away. At least he was kind enough to give me an autograph when I had asked him for one when I was a kid.

But don't get me wrong, Darrell Green has done a lot of good for the community. It's just that he's not the only one, and sometimes it seems like that what he wants you to believe

SS, lol. Thanks. You should have pointed out to the Skins how much a 30 sec. commercial costs and or one for the SB, then mentioned that if he wants his plug you'll be happy to give it for that price.

Ha! Well it wasn't even commercial time, it was content time. So 30 seconds about his charity, meant 30 less seconds for something else. Which basically meant the other story had to be killed

I wish this lockout would just end already, so we can find out once and for all about Young

Re: Skinsfaninok's Available NFL QBs Poll

SS, sorry for breaking this down seperatly but the autograph issue still brings me back to a time when I think he learned people (fans) were selling his autograph. He was upset about that and stopped. I think he could have singed it for the kid, or atleast provided a better explaination. I'm not defending him. I was not there. He probably is a selfish "me" type of person.

Just like I had Riggins on a pedistal up until he crawls under the table at the white house and hits on "Sandy baby." lol. I still like him though. Thats some funny stuff right there.

Seriously, I'm dying for some free agent/trade action.

Your killing me. I want the lockout to end also, but the more I hear about the VY crap I'm almost satisfied if the lockout stays in place so I don't have to hear that they are interested.

I'm sorry, I just don't get the fascination with him. Yes he was a high draft pick but what has he done? please don't throw out statistics, where did "he" take the team? for some reason I recall him either injured or throwing a tantrum. for what ever reason prescription drugs come to mind also, but I could be confusing him with the Raiders ex-QB.

Why is it that I feel like I'm the only one who realizes that no matter who we bring in to be QB they will not know the offense better then Grossman and right now not know it better then Beck. Whoever comes in will have to learn the system and playcalls, which McNabb is supposed to be such a good QB and he supposedly had a hard time learning all of it.

I was not in favor of McNabb coming here but I'd rather the coach's kiss and make up and have him learn the rest of it and run it vs. having VY hear trying to learn the system for his first time and having to deal with his injury issue's and tempertantrums.

Sorry I just don't get it. So he doesn't cost the team anything. Is there no one else out there that will not cost anything? I see no upside with VY. All down side. Just like Malcomb Kelly. Cut him already.

I'm with ya! I would also rather just see McNabb & the Shannys make up. I know it's not likely given what's transpired. But really, if McNabb doesn't live up to expectations as a professional, i.e. hasn't grasped the offense & still has accuracy issues, why would Young be any improvement?

I realize they could keep him on the back burner & take their time w/him, I would just really be puzzled if Mike S. decided to keep him around. Young would have to do a 180 for this to be a good fit.

On the positive side, the new regime will not throw $ & guarantees his way. Maybe VY's value is so low now that the Skins are looking to get him at bargain price, see how it goes in camp & if it doesn't work out have nothing to lose by cutting him.

If VY ever matures and sets his mind on becoming a quality QB he could definitely be dangerous.

The difference is you can bring in VY and let him truly earn the starting job. If the Shanahans have as much confidence in Beck as they say, you can let VY battle it out for the #2 spot until he is really ready to take the reins. If that doesn't happen you cut him loose with no little to no financial risk. It's definitely a low risk high reward type of situation.

I don't really know how I feel about Young. But his upside, in my opinion, is higher than that of Beck or even Grossman.

I'm not sure McNabb will be back, but even if he did he's not the long term answer. Grossman I'm sure can be solid, but nothing more than that. Beck-if he is our starter I hope he surprises me. Because I still don't see what makes him great.

I've seen greatness from Young, but he is unpredictable. Still, he is young and could potentially be the best QB we've had. And you know what my philosophy is with getting a QB-go big or go home! I'm willing to take a huge chance on Young than just go with the flow with Rex

And then there's Alex Smith...ok, I'll stop

Re: Skinsfaninok's Available NFL QBs Poll

I think a VY-JBeck camp competition could work well for the Skins. It costs nothing in picks (supposedly) for VY, and Beck hasn't truly won the job, but both seem to have reasonably high ceiling - extremely low floor potential. I think BA would write VY's contract to make it friendly for the Skins to go either way depending how the camp competition ended up.

Whoever Qb's the team it needs to be someone both father & son are in agreement with. There seemed to be a great divide between the two on McNabb and we can very well do without a repeat.

That's what I was getting at in my last paragraph, I trust that Allen & co. will work out a deal that doesn't put much if any risk in bringing him in. That assumes of course that he can't find anything better. I would think that we could sign him to an incentive laden contract that we could get out of at little to no cost, but some team might give him some guaranteed $ right away.

I'd rather see Kyle Orton under center for the Skins than any off the choices listed above. Seems like slim pickins - WHATEVER rules free agency falls under this year. Maybe we can snap up that Devlin kid from Delaware to push John Beck a little
