I agree the workouts aren't all that helpful without coaches there, but I'm not sure it's just a PR move. I think players are genuinely eager to get back to work and these workouts are at least helping to get playbooks out to the rooks and getting them into the fold.

Maybe...I am not really down on individual players...just their leadership. Many of them may have a genuine interest in getting back to work but that doesn't make these workouts productive. I do agree though that getting the playbooks to rookies is big...provided that they are able to understand it without having coaches install it in practice. I guess any bit of familiarity they gain from flipping through it has to help somewhat though...
