ESPN's redskins offseason overview

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/column...=2078813&num=3

i skipped the overview of philadelphia and dallas. it's at the bottom of the page. it's okay depending on how you view it. It says we have the best o-line in the division.

Yeah, it's not too bad. I can live with that.

Re: ESPN's redskins offseason overview

The article claims this is a "do or die year" for the skins becuase our contracts were loaded to give us a "two year window" to win the SB. I just do not believe that. Didn't we restructure Arrington Jansen, and Samuels? And didn't we move Coles in a way that takes all the cap hit this season? Do we really implode in 2006? Maybe I don't get the cap structure at all (very likely--Canuck? Help?!?), but this isn't correct I think.

It was a very balanced article, overall. And from ESPN, no less!

My understanding is that one or two key starters may have to be let go next season along with restructuring several deals. I don't know what the FO can pull off in terms of cap wheeling and dealing, but it's looks like we're headed for cap trouble (but perhaps not cap doom).

This concerns me.

I must note, that for some time I've been dubbed "one of the cap alarmists." So, just be aware that I have a more pessimistic (and in my opinion, realistic) view of the salary cap situation. Right now, we've got too much committed in about 15 players. Right now, we're going to hit the cap ceiling like a ton of bricks next year.

However, I don't know which players are amenable or have already agreed to restructure their deals in the future. I don't know which starters are going to be "releaseable" due to back-ups shining. I don't know as much about the cap as say, CrazyCanuck. So, take my predictions with a grain of salt. I'm not saying disregard them because I ruly believe we're headed for trouble (but not complete doom).

Basically, it's a little hard to tell how bad our cap situation is going to be until we get through several weeks of the regular season. By that point, it will become more clear what our future needs are, where we have excess talent (and thus at what positions personnel might be expendable), who got cut before the start of the regular season (i.e. Barrow), etc.

Wow, he said that we have the most solid offensive line in the division?

The article says there is guarantee that Gibbs will want to coach beyond this season?

I still don't understand where thinking like this is coming from.

Gibbs has said he's committed to 5 years, personally that's all I need from him. All these speculations about him jetting after just a season or two is really ridiculous.

Exactly. Gibbs might stretch truths or "fabricate" to the media just to help out the organization but all-in-all the man TELLS the truth.

He'll be here for the time he promised.

Re: ESPN's redskins offseason overview

From a pure talent standpoint, it's hard to argue that we don't have a very talented offensive line.

Whether that talent equates to production is another story.

Re: ESPN's redskins offseason overview

Before Jansen went down last year we werent concerned at all about our O-line. With a healthy Jansen last year, we would have been weak at center with an offensive line just getting geared up for lots of guard and center pulling.

That was their first season with that run heavy system. So now we have Mr. reliable back(Jansen). Chris Samuels is still well, well above average, and would start on any team. Randy Thomas is a serious bad ass in my ignorant opinion. Dockery is about average, if not a little less. Dockery is an enigma to me at this point. This will be a good year to gauge his progress. Casey Rabach is versatile, which is always helpfull when it seems like we lose on average one starting o-lineman a year. He needs to step up his level of play this year if he ever wants a shot at the big deal one day.

And this is the second year in this run system. Which definitely doesnt guarantee success, but it supports it.

"The Best In the NFC East?" ----I dont know, maybe. It's early.

"Most improved" ----- there should be no doubt.

We have depth this year.

Re: ESPN's redskins offseason overview

I may have missed some things, but never have I heard say anything that made me believe he was building a team to win immediately. he has always maintained "building for the future", "long term", "a Redskin team built to win for years to come", etc. Additionally, who in the hell (besides a knucklehead journalist) thinks this is a "make it or barake it year"? I have waited since Gibbs last tour for a winning team!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm also one of the guys who believes that it's won in the trenches. With our additions and returning players, this will translate into more yards for Portis and more yards for Ramsey.

I also believe that we have the most talented o-line but it remain to be seen will they walk the walk. the key will be can cp be patient and the holes open for him instead of him blasting pass our lineman. the switch to zone blocking will also help cp break those game-breaking runs during the games. with that said will might be a fun season to be a redskin fan.as long as we resolve that sean taylor saga.
