I know of a rookie that rushed for over 1800 yards his rookie season. (Dickerson)

Barry did it too, I think he had around 1300 or so, and I think its actually quite common for rookie running backs to have over 1000 yards. I think its something like 30 or 40 rooks to have done it. I just dont think its as rare as you think.

* Just looked this up, there have bee 56 rooks to hit the mark of 1000. Even the Redskins had their own, good ol Reggie Brooks, in 1993.
