Re: Coaching Staff update

NFL.com Blogs » Blog Archive Redskins hire Haslett to run defense «

Former Saints coach Jim Haslett has signed a three-year contract to become the Redskins’ defensive coordinator, according to league sources.

Haslett takes over for Greg Blache, who is expected to retire, and joins new coach Mike Shanahan’s staff. Haslett interviewed with Washington on Monday and had been scheduled to interview in New York for the Giants’ defensive coordinator job later this week.

Look for Haslett to invoke lots of 3-4 elements in this defense — Shanahan reportedly is intrigued by that scheme. Haslett could bring defensive line coach Tim Krumrie with him, but the Redskins also interviewed former Giants assistant Mike Waufle as a defensive line coach candidate Monday, at a time when Haslett also was interviewing. Longtime Shanahan associate Bob Slowik will be a part of the staff as well, sources said, likely coaching in the secondary in some capacity.

Sources said Rick Venturi is a strong candidate to be the Redskins’ linebackers coach, and the team also has asked for and been granted permission to interview Lou Spanos, who spent the last 15 years as an assistant linebackers coach with the Steelers, who run a 3-4 defense (Haslett ran a 3-4 when he coached in Pittsburgh as well).

Current secondary coach Jerry Gray, who interviewed for the Redskins’ defensive coordinator and head-coaching jobs but received neither, is a candidate to remain on staff. Redskins safeties coach Steve Jackson, who interviewed to remain on staff in some capacity Tuesday, also could stay.

Nice work with Twitter, Facebook, and the app

Rick Venturi is disappointing, would have preferred they stuck with Olivadotti

Everyone sounds down on Venturi, Maybe Spanos would be better, plus he's worked with Haslett before.

Re: Coaching Staff update

Venturi is a major head-scratcher - perhaps Olivadotti didn't want the job or they didnt feel he was qualified to coach 3-4 linebackers? It just said he was a candidate, so perhaps they're just doing due dilligence and interviewing a variety of guys - nothing wrong with that Spanos wouldn't be a bad choice, although i've always like olivadotti - there was a really nice piece on him at redskins.com a while back. he was someone that seemed like an eventual DC candidate.

I'm also confused as to how Slowick and Grey could both be on the staff, as they both coach the secondary. Maybe Slowick would just be a consultant of some sort?

If April removes ARE from Special Teams entirely (assuming he remains on the team at all) then he'll be worth every penny. Although I have to say Smith was the best coordinator - by far - that we've had on our team the past 2 years.

Nooo. They absolutly need to pay April and get him in. There is not many really great ST's coach's and he's actually the best. One would think if Smith's unit got better every year then we are making progress and he should be retained but I can't say honestly that the team is getting better. The team averages to get to the 30yrd line everytime they touch the ball. Only 1 KR for a TD since his long tenure here.

I guess if we have no other option then we should just keep Smith cause for no other reason I guess he's consistant. But I think if this team is kinda in renovation mode and trying to get better it would be rediculously crazy to not to pick up April who is free for the taking right now. We don't have to ask anyone for permission. We don't have to come up with any cute titles to pick him up. Plus we hear all the time from HC's throughout the league about how ST's is such an important puzzle and we are going to sit back and go ...well, he's kinda expensive so maybe it's not that important. We would rather stay consistantly good vs. becoming great at an expense.

I agree...but I doubt we get April, everyone wants him...and I think I read somewhere that he cancelled a meeting with the skins

Redskins coaching staff reports (Meidt retained)

Chris Meidt to be retained, Bobby Turner coming to DC

Does Meidt mean the return of Campbell?
