During the 2013 regular season, there were 5 missed extra points, and 6 missed field goals between 20 and 29 yards (No FGs were missed inside 20). I don't think eliminating it is the answer, but a change isn't a bad thing. Move it back to the 8, 13, or 18, but keep the field goal kicker relevant. If you eliminate the extra point, there will be coaches out there that either place those duties on a punter to open up the roster spot, or don't kick at all and always go for two/go for it on fourth inside FG range.

But I know all too well the pain of a missed extra point. I lost in the 2009 Warpath (Free) Fantasy Football League Championship game because Ryan Longwell missed an extra point...

if entertainment is the goal, how would taking a football play away add entertainment?

id rather have 123 footbal plays in a game than 119.

id rather leave the 1% chance a kicker may miss a PAT to tie the game in closing seconds.

isnt a missed PAT to tie or win the game a super entertaining play?

i just dont see a compelling argument to change it and i think the compelling reason would have to substantially outweigh any counter benefit to allow for a rule change.

but if entertainment is the reason ... isnt any football play more entertaining than none at all?

Keep everything the way it is. If you make it harder for the extra point or encourage more teams to go for 2 the chances are the score will not be tied for very long after 0-0 and you will have teams on odd score numbers quickly. You probably won't see any more tied scores late in games or games going to overtime.

The NFL is looking at making extra point attempts 43-yards long.

"The extra point is almost automatic. I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd," Goodell said at the time. "So it's a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play."

One way to add excitement to the extra point is to make the kick longer and that's exactly what the competition committee is discussing. According to NFL.com, the league is in the very early stages of a discussion that could lead to extra points being moved back from the 2-yard line to the 25-yard-line for the 2014 preseason. That would make the kick a 43-yard attempt instead of a 20-yard attempt.

More stupidity from the mind of Roger Goodell! Here's the scenario I imagine: Two teams struggle against one another in the wind, rain and mud for four quarters only to have the game hinge on a nearly unmakeable 43-yard extra point attempt off the foot of a virtual non-participant! That makes no sense whatsoever. What the hell is this ridiculous commissioner trying to do to my favorite sport?!

43 is a pretty long kick for just 1 point.

And I doubt it's Goodell alone coming up with these proposals.

I think he's probably got bigger things to worry about.

Now, removing John Mara for making a fool of himself and exposing the NFL to anti-trust litigation back when he was speaking publicly on Capgate, let alone publicly enforcing illegal collusion, getting an ill-considered rule change just because he didn't like a play against his team, would be a start at making the committee "not a joke".
