Re: Would Monk Be in the HOF if?
HOF induction for 2008 will include D.Green and Monk. I have been saying that for 3 years now and I still believe it. I am still mad about Irvin going first but that doesn't mean he was better.

Darrell Green is going to have the same problem. Deion Sanders Chris Carter will both make it in before any Redskin gets in again (and don't try the Deion as a Redskin line, he was a Cowgirl agent here for the cash).

Re: Would Monk Be in the HOF if?
If only he hadn't had been hurt during the first two Super Bowl winning seasons.
In 82, he was our primary target but got hurt against the Cardinals in the last game of the season. He missed the playoffs and our win against the Dolphins. In 87, Monk was injured again and a nonfactor in the playoffs and the Super Bowl, where he had only one catch. Meanwhile, his replacement Sanders went off that day. Being essentially a nonfactor during those two championship runs lends evidence to those who say he never had any signature moments--since these sort of moments only occur (or at least are immortalized) during the playoffs and Super Bowl. |

The press and most USA sports fans in general only care about scoring and the flashy stats and headlines. On offense a great player (wr for example) gets double teamed and a lesser teamate will get more stats. On defense they mostly judge players by sacks and interceptions, which is a big mistake. A lot of times a better teammate is getting double teamed because he is so great and another lesser player goes unblocked and get the glory sack. Same with DB's, the great CB or safety is avoided so they throw more to the lesser player. So his chances for interceptions is going to be higher. Stats should not be the main measure for who gets in and the press should not be the decider (borrowed made up word). |

Re: Would Monk Be in the HOF if?
Why does everyone forget what he did in the SB against the Bills??
Was 7 catches for 113 yards in a Super Bowl route just not noteable enough? He pretty much took over the game at one point. |

Re: Would Monk Be in the HOF if?
Damn straight that is it. To make that case I bring up the case of one Chris Spielman LB for Ohio State 1984-87 and the Lombardi trophy vote of 1986. It was between Spielman, Bosworth and Cornelius Bennett. Both Spielman and Bennett were better statistically than Bosworth that season. Damn, Spielman had more tackles than the other two combined, but Bosworth won since he was more showy and outrageous. To get press and any attention you need to be at least mouthy anymore, even better be outrageous and that was true back in the day Art was playing also. Broadway Joe sort of started that back in the day going with glitiz, etc. Irving was an asshole, he made waves, said a bunch of crap, and loved his coke and became a media sensation for it. He probably shared some coke with members of the media for all we know. Art should have been inducted in the HOF back in the late 90's. If he isn't inducted soon, I say we organzie a protest bring some molotov cocktails, and have ourselves one helluva bonfire!!!!!

Re: Would Monk Be in the HOF if?
We can discuss this more the next time they hose him over. I just wanted to make the point that at least Monk has a life apart from football. I think they voted Irvin in because they were afraid he would go off the rails if he were rejected. They know Monk won't utter a peep, so it's an easy thing for them to do.

Re: Would Monk Be in the HOF if?
This is a thread that is dear to my heart and it hurts bad!! This man gave it his all, set all kinds of records and was the classiest player ever (D.Green too). All this writers that keep voting against him are idiots that love the M. Irvin, T.O. types. Jerry Rice played in a passing team, had Joe Montana and Steve Young for QB's. Who did Art have besides Theismann that was decent? The Redskins are running team first, the Niners were primarily a passing team with 2 of the best QB's around. I would say Monk and Rice talent wise are the same, if not, Monk has an edge because of my primary bias and he basically played in a tougher division. Jerry played twice a year against crappy Falcons, Saints and Rams teams (think what Monk could have done if Montana was his QB and he played against those teams 6 times a year? Monk had the Cowboys, Giants, Eagles (great teams in the 80's, ok Cowboys had a few bad years). You want to talk class? Monk was the humble quiet one, Jerry was the flashy one with the fifi hairdo, tattoo's, etc. got caught in a massage parlor, of course he said it was a joke his friends played on him. Monk had bad luck with injuries when it came to those early SB years, I was so happy for him when he scored agains the Bills in the last SB for the Skins. I've lived in SF, CA for 25 years and have seen Rice play and bitch and whine because he didn't get enough balls his way, gee I wonder where T.O. got that attitude? Rice was a great player, but will never ever have the class that Art was. Joe Theismann use to say that Art Monk was the best receiver, I second that!! Think what the NFL would be like if there was more Art Monk types around? He was a real gentleman and to me, the best damn receiver ever!!
