I see. Good to know. I heard some reporters talking about it on the news, and they said that some states' hit and run laws don't apply to single car accidents. Although, they didn't say whether that was the case for Illinois.

My old roommate got a leaving the scene of a accident when he was drinking. Smartest move he ever made. He did have to attend ASAP because of suspison of alcohol (his person smelled of alcohol when the cop came to his house), but otherwise just a fine of like $250 and a couple of points on his record.

Well, I checked Illinois' statutes and it looks like this type of accident would be classified as a class A misdemeanor. I'm not sure what type of punishment there is for this kind of misdemeanor. Most likely it would be either a fine and court cost, temporary license suspension or some type of unsupervised probation possibly.

DUI possibly? Maybe he did what Hulk Hogan's kid did and just decided to floor it and lost control. If that isn't it then DUI for sure. You don't abandon a Lamborghini unless you could get nailed for something that can land you behind bars or some very bad press. They can tell by skid marks how fast you were going so he could have just bolted after the wreck. My guess is DUI though, but don't quote me on it.

I'm not questioning that alcohol wasn't involved, however he can't be charged with a DUI if there is no evidence. They do not have blood test, breathalizer, or a sobriety test on the scene.

The SI article says:

He won't get the maximum, so it'll probably be a fine and probation.

BRIGGS REPORTED CAR STOLEN by Michael David Smith

Bears linebacker Lance Briggs now admits that not only did he crash and abandon his $350,000 Lamborghini at 3 a.m. Monday, but he initially reported the car stolen.

''When it happened, the first thing I did was, obviously, I panicked,'' Briggs said, per the Associated Press. ''I didn't want there to be a big scene there. And so I left the scene. When I left, I called the tow truck. I also was startled, and I called to report that my car was stolen.

''Within probably 10 minutes, I called back and accepted responsibility for what I did because it was ridiculous in the first place.''

Illinois Police charged Briggs with leaving the scene of an accident. They have apparently not charged him with any crime related to filing a false police report.

This is all, to say the least, suspicious behavior on Briggs' part. It's strange that at a time when NFL teams are saying they have learned the importance of checking up on the off-field lives of their players, the Bears -- especially head coach Lovie Smith -- are acting as though there's nothing suspicious at all about crashing your car, abandoning it and reporting it stolen.
