Why would Pete Carroll leave USC to come back to the grind of the NFL? Just doesn't make sense to me.

Coaches have pride and egos.. this is why you'll see a coach leave a successful program and then come back with a project team

He's been wanting to try to prove himself at the NFL again

Let me give you just a couple of reasons he might want to leave USC for the NFL:

1. The Reggie Bush investigation is still simmering. AND a judge just ruled against Carroll who argued that the NCAA investigators could not depose him - - that means interview him under oath. Now they can and such a deposition opens the POSSIBILITY that:
a. There was involvement in the Reggie Bush mess by a coach or coaches

b. There was no knowledge or oversight from coaches which could lead to the NCAA's dreaded "lack of insitutional control" over improper behaviors.

2. The QB that he demoted to start Barkley all year has transferred from USC. He's gone and he ain't coming back.

3. Joe McKnight and his rogue SUV are also leaving USC for the NFL this year.

The surprise to me is why the Seahawks are so interested in Carroll and why the Bears reportedly lusted after him Here is is NFL head coaching history:

1. He coached the Jets for 1 year. His team started out 6-4 and lost the final 6 games of the season. Hardly what you would call a rousing success...

2. He coached the Pats for 3 years. He took over the Pats' team that went to the Super Bowl and lost to the Packers. He did not take over a team full of stumblebums. Here is what his teams did:
Year 1: Won AFC East.

Year 2: Made playoffs as a wild-card.

Year 3: Missed playoffs.
Do you see a trend there that you find attractive?

What else does Carrol have to prove in college? Might as well take the big payday and try to prove himself on the next level. If the Seahawks are able to bring in Carrol then canning Mora was a no-brainer.

CARROL? How can anyone be surprised that he will consider leaving USC?
Read the writing on the wall: If he stays, he essentially gets executed by brewing NCAA investigations into illegal recruitment and player misconduct going back 6-8 years. Let's go ahead and call a spade a spade like Bob Knight did about John Calipari. Carrol's going to skip town out of LA because it won't be for long that the last 5 years of wins and championships will be stripped from USC. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH "nothing else to prove at the college level"

Ah hah, well that explains why he's leaving USC.

So this makes our pick at 4th more valuable, right? Hasslebeck isn't a young guy, but a great mentor to the franchise QB that Seattle needs (plus the new Seattle coach may want a new QB). Since The Warpath can't even come close to a consensus on do-we-or-don't-we draft a QB with the 4th pick, do we trade down with Seattle so they can get in position for a top QB?

Hasselbeck has been hit with injury bug in Seattle recently so we could possibly trade back with them. Buffalo might want a franchise QB also.

Since we are not that good of a team right now I think it would be smarter for the Seahawks to start drafting Offensive Linemen & wide receivers.

I would rather have Pete Carroll as our General manager instead of a coach.(But I think he is better then Mora as a coach)

To me they're the same guy. Mora should go and coach college.

I think the timing has more to with USC's possible probation from Bowl games coming up, from all of the alleged corruption in their recruiting/athletic department. If there's no big games in their foreseable future, what's the incentive for the coach to stay? Also, he wants to grab a lifeboat before the ship goes down.

I can't figure out what the NFL sees in Pete Carroll. He was an average to below average coach in the NFL. Now just because he did a great job recruiting in college he is coaching royalty. Will he petition Goodell to allow him 10 1st round draft picks each year? I just don't see it with him. I am okay with him getting another opportunity but the way teams like court him every offseason makes no sense to me.

I was surprised to learn that he was 33-31 as a head coach in the NFL. In fact he was 27-21 as the Patriots head coach. Fired after going 8-8 in his third year and replaced by Belicheck.
