I can't believe this idea is even being entertained. I've said this 1 million times on this site: Betts isn't a power runner. Betts had the best day of his career today and I wasn't particularly impressed. That said: here's some meat.

You all want to make Betts the unquestioned starter next year by trading Clinton Portis...did you know that Betts has less career carries than Portis had this season! Betts' career avg for yards per carry: 4.0, Portis: 4.9.

This year Betts had a higher ypc, but he had 26.2% of the carries Portis had. Just over 1/4 and you all think Betts can carry the load? Answer me a question. Why didn't Betts start last season when Trung went down? He got hurt. Why didn't Betts have a good preseason? He got hurt! He's not durable and he doesn't run that hard. I've noticed several occasions where he stops his legs when he's wrapped up, good runners can break tackles. I see him hit piles and go backwards. I've never seen him step out of a pile and make a decent gain. I saw Portis do it agains the Lions. I haven't seen anything from Ladell Betts that makes me think that he would be a good running back as the starter. I don't even like him as the change of pace.

Portis has run for 4,414 yards and 34 TD's in his career and you want to replace him with a guy who has run for 815 yards and 3 total touchdowns in the same amout of time...are you on crack?

Cut the whole damn bunch of them. Clearly, we need to start from the ground up. Let's get some big name free agents in here. We need more changes because the changes we made last year didn't work. Obviously, changing things again will work, it always has in the past - Oh wait...

Dear lord, please save us poor Skins fans from ourselves.

Wow. Wilbon is right, us Redskins fans need to get some perspective. Portis is one of the top 5 backs in the game today. He's 23 years old and people are ready to give up on him because he only had 1300 yds on a pathetic offense? Just stop. If he had completely crapped the bed and had 500 yds for the season then may I could see the complaints, but the whole offense stunk. If Betts was the answer then why didn't he do jack against the Cowboys when he needed to get first downs? Oh, can one man not do it all by himself? He needs others to help? Hmm.. It's going to be a long offseason if we have to put up with this crap for 6 months.

When was the last time we had a back run for 1300 yards? I see no reason to trade Portis. I can see some complaints about him, none of them tradeworthy!

With an improved line in front of him next year, a year in the system under his belt, and some modifications to the running game Portis could easily recapture some of his explosive play and go for 1500+ yards and double-digit scores.

Portis is not a problem that needs fixing in the least bit, in fact I hope he's our back for the next 7 years.

Betts looks like a solid backup/spot starter, but let's not get out of control here. He had a nice day against a flat out bad Minnesota defense. That's not going to impress me enough to say we should trade our franchise RB.

That would be like the Colts thinking they could trade Manning after their rookie backup QB came in and played well today. It's nonsense and not even worth talking about at length.

You don't pay a guy Portis-type money and not start him.

You don't say we have too much inconsistency and make a move like that.

You don't look at one game against the worst defense in the league and make the guy a starter for running well.

Are you blind, or did you not watch the fucking game? He broke tons of tackles and never stopped. For Christsakes, he got hit 5 yards shy of a first down and bullied his way for the first. Has Portis done that against anybody? No. If Portis doesn't have an open lane to run, he can't do shit.

Yep! There is no doubt that Portis is our number one back, but having Betts giving Portis a breather and stepping up if Portis is injuried is definitely a plus for us! I think it's very valuable for us to keep Betts.

Portis is staying here. It is crazy to consider trading him even Champ. Let Champ sink in the Denver snow. He shoulda stayed in DC under Gibbs and Williams, but he wanted out, so let him go. Portis is a great back and I think he has a great future here behind Joe Gibbs. Portis however is used to playing AFC ball where you run your burst of 3-5 secs and take a dive. He gives up to easy as he seems to fall down or dive once he's exhausted his 1 hole. Ofcourse he doesn't do this every play but I would say 80% of them. Watch the tapes. He rather cut back into a dive than run toward it. In a previous post I mentioned Joe Washington. He wasn't afraid to give up his body, much like an LC or Thrash or Taylor, Smoot, etc. Portis will learn to work with Gibbs and vice versa. We are witnessing a change here in DC. A return to glory. So all you bandwagoning bitches calling for portis' or gibbs' head should join a current 2k4/2k5 playoff teams fansite. Cause this one if for real believers!
