All I gotta say is wow. I think that shows his frustration with how everything went down.

Saw the same frustration with Matt Jones, a couple really bad fumbles and that was it. Inactive.

Jay comes off good here, not willing to accept poor performance. Results oriented type decision.

I like this, rather than just canning the D.C. clean out the entire house. Let the new D.C. bring in his guys.

Right now someone just has to explain how the fucking game clock works, and he can go do his thing. As hard of a time as I am having getting Kirks int out of my head - his not using a timeout at the half took three points off the board (quite possibly). That would have changed everything. We would have been driving for a fg at the end and Kirk would not have pressed. Oh well.

Re: Gruden fires entire defensive staff

Official release from the team:

Quote:
LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that the following assistant coaches will not be retained:

Robb Akey
Joe Barry
Mike Clark
Perry Fewell
Redskins Will Not Retain Four Assistant Coaches

Note, they make no mention of firing Greg Manusky who coached the OLBs and Kirk Olivadotti who coached the ILBs.

Note, Manusky was the DC under Singletary in San Fran during McCloughan's time there.

Olivadotti has long been thought of highly around Redskins Park.

Let's see what happens.

Re: Gruden fires entire defensive staff

Look at the team's page listing the coaches. Akey, Barry, Clark and Fewell have all been removed. Manusky and Olivadotti remain listed.

Redskins.com | Coaches

So either they are candidates to ascend to DC, or Gruden is currently signaling he thinks highly enough to retain them, or the DC candidate Gruden has in mind has signaled that he likes those two and would keep them.

Re: Gruden fires entire defensive staff

Barry shouldn't have been hired in the first place. It was a country club hire. He never had the talent to make it work anyway. But his inability to be aggressive and stay passive with below average talent was what did it for me. If you have scrubs you have to be able to scheme things up and he seemed to never be able to do that. The 3rd and longs that were always converted also were probably his downfall.

I hope Gruden hires the best person that's out there, and not one of his Tampa or Cincy buddies.

I agree, there's this goofy tendency in the NFL to hire people you're familiar with. Why wouldn't you open it up to everybody and just objectively look at their experience, results, and interviews. If you have personal experience with them that can serve as a tiebreaker, fine. But I'm a hiring manager, and while it's nowhere near the same as hiring coaches, I'd be stupid to restrict myself to hiring people who I either worked with previously or went to school with.

Hopefully Gruden keeps his mind open. There are good candidates out there.
