Giants Keeping Tom Coughlin

ESPN.com - NFL - All signs point to Giants retaining head coach Coughlin

I guess it's a case of no real hot candidates being available.

Re: Giants keeping Coughlin?

That seems like a bad reason to keep a coach who seems like he is pretty much hated by his team. I've never heard as many players claim that their team was outcoached as often as the Giants have in the past couple of seasons, except for maybe when Bill Callahan was at the helm for the hapless Oakland Raiders.

I thoroughly expect that team to fall apart next season. No Tiki to keep defenses honest or even attempt to lead that team. Eli never looks he cares or even knows what's going on sometimes, Shockey and Burress are pricks and it seems like the only thing any of them have in common is a hatred for their coach. Next season could be an interesting one to watch for the Giants.

Meaning the Skins should at least finish third in the division!

I heard that the players went to bat for the Giants to keep him. His winning record is better than Gibbs and the Tuna as returning coaches. I also remember a coach which got alot of flack from players called Marty which we only had for one year and look what he has done sense.

good point, that team had a couple vet prima donnas, e.g. Bruce smith (love him, but his last few years here were all about his sack record), but he turned that season around & might've gotten em in the right direction if the danny had lived up to his end.
Funny, I said at the beginning of the year that the g-men reminded me of the 2000 Redskins. Though marty was here in 01, a lot of the same guys were on the team. Both those teams & the g-men have a lot of vets. I think it's harder for a disciplinarian coach to coach that tough style w/older players who've been around to see how other coaches do it.

Hmmmmm...guess I'm wrong on that one then. I agree Marty has been very good since leaving and I didn't think getting rid of him was a good idea. However, I really don't like Tom Coughlin and wanted to see him fired so it may have been selective memory on my part. It still seems to me that Plax and Shockey don't like. That team is full of turmoil, I don't know that he has too much control of it. I know he's got a decent record, I just don't know how I would feel about him trying to lead this team for another season. You've got Plax and Shockey showing Eli up on the field, Strahan basically threatening reporters and Eli taking huge steps backwards, I just wouldn't have confidence in him if I were the GM/owner.

I hated losing to them but it helped us out in the future. Making the playoofs gave them just a little less reason to fire him. He is killing that team.

whatever... Its not like he has underperformed. Its not like he has done amazing either but thing is his team hates him. I am looking for a franchise breakdown sometime next year.

Re: Giants keeping Coughlin?

If the whole team and not just a few malcontent primadonna's were anti-Coughlin then I can see that he should be fired. Giants management would be extremely foolish to keep Coughlin if the team as a whole hated him and as a result will not perform for him.

Re: Giants keeping Coughlin?

Well see that's the thing about firing coaches. Why would you want to fire him if there aren't any better options available?

The team has no confidence in Coughlin and thinks he gets outcoached, but what are they going to think if they bring in a Bobby Petrino type guy, ie some college coach? Given the lack of success most college coaches have, wouldn't it stand to reason that the Giants would get fed up with any mistakes their coach makes as well?

I mean, maybe not, you never know if the next college coach or young assistant is going to be a good one. But chances are, the Giants would just be bitching and moaning under the new coach, just like they would be for Coughlin.

If they could get their hands on Grimm, I'd think he would be an upgrade over Coughlin. Too bad the Steelers are probably all over him. But other than Grimm, who's definitely better than Tom Coughlin? Doesn't make sense to me to just go changing coaches; you only do it if you've got someone you are pretty sure is going to be better.

Re: Giants keeping Coughlin?

On Coughlin, he's an ill-tempered old man who's horrible at Xs and Os, and seems to have lost his team's respect. I am in no way saying he's a great coach. But if Eli Manning played up to his potential, wouldn't the team be winning a bit more often? And wouldn't a little more winning put an end to all of the bitching and moaning?

I just wonder how well a new coach would do in NY with Eli at the helm. I'm guessing not very well, because in the end, Eli just isn't a good QB in my opinion, and doesn't have much of a chance to be much better. He's just an overrated bum with the last name Manning.

Re: Giants keeping Coughlin?

I think maybe their thinking is wait one more year, possibly go after Pioli next offseason again and let Pioli bring his own coach in.

As for better choices-Mike Martz? Ron Rivera? Denzel Washington?

I think the Giants are clearly waiting for Charlie Weiss to step down to replace Coughlin......

And I agree with Schneed, Elis is soo overrated. If it wasn't for his last name, he would already be labeled as a bust.

If it wasn't for his name, he wouldn't have been a first round pick, and would be a backup somewhere right now...not a bust.
