What would Betts get on the open market today?

I was thinking about this...although our deal with Betts kind of seemed like a steal at the time, how unbelievable does it seem now? He probably would have been one of the top three free agent running back prospects. It's possible he could have landed 12-15 million in guarantees or more.

What do you guys think Betts would be commanding right now if teams were bidding on him (and how mad must he be at his agent)?

I think he'd get at least a $10 million signing bonus.

Well the FO gets a lot of shit for the bad moves but just think what would have been said if Betts and Dockery walked after big contracts!!! Its funny how low on the radar the Betts deal was last fall!!!

That's why it amazed me that we were able to re-sign him. Just look at what Dockery got, there's your answer. Betts would have probably doubled his money at least and got a starting job.

portis told betts that leaving isn't a good idea, since the grass isn't always greener... it was a great deal for the skins at the time, and now seeing ahman green... betts' agent dun f'd up.

Green got what, $23M for 4 years?

Betts could have easily gotten over $30M.

Give some credit to this front office for locking up Betts with such a cheap deal.

Yes and no. Did Kris Dielman make a bad deal leaving 10+million on the table in Seattle to stay in SD? Sometime it's better to stay home for less and know the team. It really up to the player!

Is Betts looking for a building to jump off this morning, or putting a bullet in his agent? WTF is up with that?

yeah, but dielman would have NEVER gotten even 39$mill last year.

I agree that a lot of times money isn't the most important factor, but in the NFL it's rare to take SOO much less money without even testing the market. I really think portis helped influence betts on this one from the interviews i heard... yay portis - our future GM (taylor, moss, helped on betts - anyone else he was bugging JG about?).

Or Dockery,L.Davis or Steinbach. I still can't believe the Cowboys paid Davis that much!

Sheriff pointed out how out of whack contracts are now. Players on all teams are going to be angling for new contracts after this market.

Re: What would Betts get on the open market today?

you know this reminds me of the last couple of years in the NBA. A decent player who can contribute getting big contracts because there aren't that many decent players out there. Etan Thomas getting that big deal, chris Kamen (spelling?) got a big deal and he doesnt do a whole lot. These guys (guards, tackles) are starting to get some recognition for being pieces that are not interchangeable. They are starting to be "the needed" guys to make the team run like a smooth oiled machine. Hey, no matter how good your RB's and QB's are, if there aren't holes to run through, or your on your ass all the time, the team will not win games. and the guys in the trenches are finally getting some just due!
