F... Deer

I don't really like using the "F" word, but considering what happened to me tonight, I'm going to use it this time.

F... deer. I f'ing hate them. They are everywhere around here. On my way home this evening a very large buck appeared out of thin air and completely demolished the entire right side of my brand spankin new 2008 Honda Accord. First he hit the front fender. Then his head hit my passenger window sending a shower of glass all over me. He put large dents in both doors and then finished the back end off with a nice large dent there too, shattering the tail light. I'm not kidding, when my passenger window shattered, I had visions of that deer scene from "Tommy Boy" running through my head.

This sucks beyond belief. I haven't even made a friggin payment on my car yet. This is the 2nd time this has happened. Four years ago my husband's S10 pickup was completely totaled by a deer as well. These things are nothing more than four legged, mobile wrecking balls.

I'm ok though. It could have been worse. Luckily there were no cars around and I didn't lose control of the car. I'm just bummed and need to vent. I think the only thing that might cheer me up is if we kick Dallas' ass this weekend.

Arghhh... What a mess!

Re: F... Deer

That sucks LB.

I was raised by deer. Well not exactly, but growing up there were deer all around my neighborhood. When my family first moved in the deer would run as fast as they could through our lawn. As time went by they got more comfortable and would linger. When I was in 7th grade a family of about 4-5 deer would sit down beside me while I'd wait for the school bus. When the bus would come I'd get on and they all would get up look at the bus and stroll away. It was kind of bizarre.

But I've been involved in deer related accidents. One time I wrecked the front driver side of my '93 Accord swerving to avoid a deer

I was terrified the first time I saw them sitting there. I mean I know they're not raging carnivores but still I'd never seen them so close. By the third day I was cool with it. It only went on for a couple of weeks by the way

I was driving to work in my beat up 01 Civic, with a headlamp out. Ahead, I see the first run go back, so I slowed down knowing damn well these things travel in packs. Sure enough, the 2nd one jumps out and I smack it with the right front part of the bumper.
I see a theme. Deer hate Hondas. Maybe they're smarter than I'v given them credit for in the past.

I sure hope not. I drive an 02 Honda (that I don't make payments on) and if a deer smashes it up, I can't afford another car! . Then I'm stuck on public transportation.

I came in close encounters with deer in Rock Creek Park (anyone from the Metro area knows this is where Deer love to hang out and smash up your car). But I haven't hit one yet.

But wow, an 08 Honda LB? I saw one of those at the dealership and I nearly attached myself to the hood. I want one SO bad. What a bummer, Lady. Insurance is going to cover it? (I kinda skimmed, so if you mentioned it, I'm sorry I missed it). Glad you're okay btw, I know more people get killed by deer every year than like.. bear attacks and shit. :P

I have State Farm and they've been great so far. They were awesome when my husband's truck was totaled by a deer. I only have to pay a $50 deductible, so that's good. Luckily the Honda dealership where I bought the car has a body shop and they're part of State Farm's preferred service providers. I feel better about Honda repairing it than taking it to Joe Schmoe down the street.

Re: F... Deer

Sorry to hear about that LB. That's some scary shit.

I was involved in a similar incident not too long ago. My cousin was driving the back roads of Montgomery County, MD (Rt. 28 to be specific) and we were all just kind of hanging back. All of a sudden.. BAM...we nailed the thing and then swerved into a ditch.

I got out and walked up to the lifeless deer, and figured it was dead.

A few moments later... it lifted up it's head. I kind of freaked... because I didn't want some suffering deer just laying there so I decided to look for something to take care of it.

After searching for about five minutes the deer stood up and just stared at me. I literally walked right up to it and asked it to leave. I think I just started yelling "Go... like... out.. into the woods or something. you can't stand in the road confused". The deer sort of drunkenly stumbled around and eventually took off.

Similar damage done to the car. I think his head hit the drivers side window. My cousin swears he made eye contact with the deer for half a second. Weird shit.

They will probably replace the doors with either new or from a car which was smashed in on the drivers side. The biggest area of concern will be the rear 1/4 which they will either pop out the dent then bondo smooth or they will cut it out and replace. I would think that they would pop it out and bondo. Because its a new car they should have no problems matching the paint. Just because its a Honda Dealer does not always mean they have the best painters or body guys. In my area we have several mom and pop body shops which do excellent work which I would not hesitate to take my car to. You may want to ask State Farm about deminished value. This is what they give over the repair for the deminished value of your car because it was in a wreck. Not sure if this would qualify but it does not hurt to ask.

Oh man, that totally sucks. So did the deer charge your car or did you hit it?

Re: F... Deer

He charged the car. I guess he just saw headlights and came bounding from the woods. I saw him at the last second in the light of my right front headlight. It wouldn't have been so bad if he had just hit me once and ran off. Noooo.... he had to do a pirouette down the whole side of the car.

I just got done venting because my wife ran over a nail that we need to replace the tire because of it. $140 bucks out the window. But as the old adage goes someone else has it worse.

I am sorry LB that does suck but no one is hurt.

Re: F... Deer

I feel your pain. The same thing happened to me a few months ago, only your damage is far worse. Luckily, I swerved at the last second and his head hit inside my wheel well! Ouch! That spun him around, and he hit the side of the bed of my truck. I just have a couple small dents, and my door creaks when I open it. I was pissed, because, like you, it was a relatively new truck (~4 months old).

From then on, I have been ultra-conservative when driving at dawn or dusk. Those are the worst times.
