Why they need a prototype receiver
That last pass is evidence of why this team need a wide out who is taller than 6 feet. If you have a prototype running the fade then the throw can be 8 feet in the air and Kelly can't touch it, instead you run the fade to Santana Moss and it's easy to pick because it has to be much lower. I'm not taking the owness off of Campbell, I don't know about making the throw, but if it were a big target, that's a totally different situation.

Re: Why they need a prototype receiver
JC simply didn't need to make that throw, he forced the issue and had plenty of time on the clock.

I agree! Very disappointed in that decision on the 16 yard line and plenty of clock, ZERO sense to throw that pass in tight coverage. And lets not forget the drive prior to this what would have been the game winner, ended in the same result a INT, he HAS to be smarter than that! Thats two weeks in a row where he had plenty of time, just made poor decisions, and tried to squeeze the ball. Inside the RED zone with the game on the line, he is having major brain farts. I'm somewhat pleased with his progress to this point, but I would have at least thought he would have progressed a little futher and made some better decisions with the ball game on the line, in these last couple of weeks.

I agree, but if it weren't Santana Moss, it would have been a very different story.

Re: Why they need a prototype receiver
Not having a big WR is a big factor in this team's continual red zone failings.

Re: Why they need a prototype receiver
Moss being hurt makes more of a difference than his size. The problem with that throw was that Jason shouldn't have made it. The play was covered.

Re: Why they need a prototype receiver
More important than size is we need some more speed at the skill positions. Although Moss is hurt, neither Randle El or Portis is a gamebreaker anymore. Our offense needs some kids that can score quickly--something never do. Gamebreakers=potential easy scores--which will help our O and our D.
Why not a 3rd/4th receiver with some jets in the 2nd-4th rounds--who can be our returner as well... |

Re: Why they need a prototype receiver
I agree with this thread 100%. Big targets, especially leapers, are SO helpful in the red zone. It gives your offense one more weapon the defense has to worry about.
A big, fast WR is probably on the tip-top of my wishlist right now. We need to be thinking that way this offseason.

Re: Why they need a prototype receiver
It's just really hard for a small guy to get open when the field is shortened to 20 yards deep or so. The burner's biggest asset is speed, but that asset is negated when there isn't enough space to use it. At some point, size and leaping ability need to come into play, it helps the WR shield the defender from the ball with his body.
There's a big reason our WRs have so few TDs this year.

I can't believe it, but I miss Darnerian McCants.
