This is a good move for both Stern and Sirius. It gets the FCC off of Stern's back (and a $500 million contract) and a bigtime personality onto the Sirius lineup.

Stern will regret this move.
Sirrius radio is the weaker of the two main competitors, Stern alone isn't enough for most people to pay the subscription fee to or change providers. I think satallite radio is the future, but I think the future will be a ways away. You never know, it will be interesting to watch. It's not like Stern's average listener does anything but live in a box and tune in with a ham radio. |

I love satellite radio and definitely believe that it has a bright future. I subscribe to XM and love it. I thought about Sirius, but there hardware options weren't as good in my mind as XM's were. XM is soon gonna roll out a streaming internet subscription service which is what I've really wanted all along.
I do think that once the new subscriptions numbers start to plateau, the providers are gonna have to back off their 'no commercials' promise.

I think this is a smart move to avoid the fcc by stern but how the heck in the world were they able to brooker(sp?) a $500 million/5 yr deal for a freakin' radio show?!?!?! Sterns gotta be laughin his ass off about not only getting away from the scrutiny of the FCC but also for getting bucks out the ying yang for talking about midgets and lesbians. That's pretty depressing.

It's a 5 year, $100 million contract....$20 million a year not $100 million a year. |

I'd be willing to bet the number of subscribers to Sirius will at least double by the time Stern hits the air.
I can't justify paying $13 a month or whatever it is just to listen to Stern, especially since I only have a 20-25 minute commute to work. My morning ride won't be the same. I like to flip back and forth between Stern and Mike & Mike but they take so many damn commerical breaks. |

Stern's listeners number around 10 million. And according to the demographic reports, many are affluent -- not the deadbeats you'd expect. But think about this, if Sirius is able to pull only 1/10 of his listeners, that's $13 million *A MONTH*, not including the start up fee and the cost of the receiver itself.
I just wonder how long it will be before some right-wing, fundamentalist bible thumpers start calling for legislation to allow the FCC to have regulatory control over satellite radio. |
