DB Option
OK, I was reading Peter Kings (I don't like him either) article from the other day on CNNSI, and I noticed he said this:
"Saban loves draft picks: He wants more of them. He is in mourning over the fact the Dolphins don't have their second-round selection this year (they dealt it for A.J. Feeley last year), and I see Saban holding out for a second- or a third-round pick for cornerback Patrick Surtain. Right now, the best offer out there for Surtain is Kansas City's fourth-round pick." Is it just me, or wouldn't it make LOTS of sense for us to trade a third rounder for Surtain (if that is actually an option)? I mean, it would free up our first rounder for the D Line or allow us to trade down more comfortably (which I would prefer) while giving us a top notch corner to line up beside Springs. |

Re: DB Option
The cap hit is an issue. But, contracts can be reworked and bonuses spread out. I just think it makes a lot of sense to bring in a young pro bowler with a 3rd rounder instead of using a first rounder on a guy who might find the same level of success in the NFL he had in college.

Re: DB Option
Why does he bring that cap hit with him?
If a player is traded, the remainder of his signing bonus is accelerated onto next year's cap - for the team that trades him. We would pick up his salary, but it would all be unguaranteed money. CC - can you chime in on this? |

He's better than Smoot. Just thought that was worth mentioning.

Re: DB Option
I haven't checked, but what is our cap looking like in 2006? I think it's an interesting option.

Re: DB Option
Trotter drops off our cap after this year. And I cant remember if our deal with coles was in time to not affect next year. Trotter clears up lots of space.

Re: DB Option
Snyder is not the only one who wants to sign and pay big bucks for established talent. No we can't afford him, why? because we spent way to much money signing everyone else's players it gets expensive, at some point we have to really on the draft and our ability to assess unproven talent, so we can keep the cap within reason.

Re: DB Option
we could have afforded him if coles didnt account for over 9 million this year. Yes, Surtain is a steal for a 3rd rounder, but its not an option our team has.

Re: DB Option
KC looks like they are goign to have a good team next year. They are definitly working hard to try and upgrade that defense.
