Dr. Cheeks criticizes campbell pick and Gibbs on NFL.com
http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/8427351
SKINNING THE TEAM The Broncos and Redskins are in trading cahoots again, but there is no argument this year as to which team got the better deal. The Redskins surrendered their third-round pick (76th overall) in this year's draft, along with first- and fourth-round selections in 2006 to acquire the 25th pick overall from the Broncos. The rumor was that they wanted Jason Campbell, Brown and Williams' quarterback at Auburn, with the pick. Everyone seems to agree that it was a steep price to pay to move up to the 25th pick, and drafting Campbell didn't make it any better. Not since the first year of the common draft in 1967 had two running backs and a quarterback from the same college been selected in the first round of the draft. I'm no college scout, I'm the first to admit, but I saw plenty of SEC games this year and Campbell didn't impress me any more than what I saw of other quarterbacks like Kyle Orton (fourth round) or 2003 Heisman Trophy winner, Jason White (undrafted). (By the way, what a strange world it is when the former Heisman winner doesn't get drafted, but a backup QB from USC, Matt Cassel, does after completing 20 passes in his college career, and so does the quarterback from Harvard, Ryan Fitzpatrick.) Why the big deal about Campbell and the Redskins? Well, because they traded three picks to the Broncos, including next year's first-round pick. They supposedly had turned down top picks in exchange for Ramsey last year but started Mark Brunell when no one else would even sign him. We know how that turned out. The Washington defense will be excellent once again, but the offense will continue to scare Joe Gibbs and the fans who once thought so highly of him. Hey, they saw the fall of Michael Jordan a few years ago with the Wizards, so it might not be quite as painful with Gibbs the second time around. To make matters more confusing, Gibbs said after the draft that "it takes a long time to get (a quarterback) ready to play for you, so we felt like it was something value-wise that we had to do." Well, considering how old you and your coaching staff are, coach, do you really think you have a long time? Considering how impatient the fans and owner seem to be the last five years, is it really worth developing another quarterback after all the trouble you went through last year? |

seems he doesn't like the Skins for other reasons. No substance to his arguements on Campbell/Gibbs

I wouldn't say no substance, he has basically stated what everyone else has been saying in and around the NFL, as well as on this board. He didn't sound like he has an axe to grind with us just stating his opinion. There are plenty worse out there who have to go out of their way to knock us and basically misrepresent us I don't think he did that here. |

His point is Campbell didn't impress anymore than than an undrafted QB, pointing out that in his opinion we overpaid or a QB that wasen't any more special than a second day pick. |

It's just one person's opinion, don't get too crazy over it.

Gregg Williams seemed to like what he saw at the mini camp. I'll take his word over some lame ass "journalist".

Re: Dr. Cheeks criticizes campbell pick and Gibbs on NFL.com
first of all the guy calls himself dr. cheeks
next i guess i have come to mends w/ this trade. i mean if we truly need a new QB it isn't to bad of a pick. I think we did however get a good player that will develope in the next year, so by next year he will have more talent than those in the draft and a first for first isn't that big of a deal. Next the 3+4, the third for this year stung really bad and i hated it, the forth for next year isn't to big of a deal to me but we did get McCune in later rounds this year. If i had the choice to do this trade again would i do it? No i would try to take back the third and thats about it otherwise it wasn't THAT bad |

I must say, I value that opinion as much as I do any other non-football opinion. There may be a reason why this person has the time to offer up such insanity regarding an incredible proven Hall of Fame coach. He has time because of all the time he spends NOT COACHING!
