Henning: Don't underestimate Gibbs

Henning: Don't underestimate Gibbs

With Washington and Carolina preparing to play Saturday night, Redskins coach Joe Gibbs is gearing up for his second season after an 11-year sabbatical from the NFL. His return was a struggle; the Redskins went 6-10.Thursday, someone asked Panthers offensive coordinator Dan Henning if the game had passed his old friend by.

"I don't know what the problems are there," Henning said. "I think if you're going to compete against Joe Gibbs, you better bring your lunch. Because I've never known him in anything he's ever done not to be excellent.

"Whatever their record was, without Joe it could have been worse. In my experience with Joe that goes back 37 years, I've never seen very much pass Joe by. When it comes to competition he's as good as there is; he'll find a way."

Asked if he thought Gibbs, 64, would stay with Washington for the long haul, Henning said, " ... Joe Gibbs is in it to win. He wants to win. There's nothing else on his mind. -- STAN OLSON
