Field Goal Rule???

I have a question that I was curious about for any rules buffs out there. The Redskins kicked their game winning field goal on 2nd down. Although Novak hit made the kick, I was wondering, if he had missed the field goal on 2nd down would he have had another shot at it on 3rd and 4th down???? I thought he would have another chance but I was told numerous times that he only gets one shot at the field goal no matter what down it is??? If anyone knows the answer I'd appreciate it..
