Nolan came to Washington after spending time as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator under Dan Reeves.

Even though Reeves and his staff were fired after the 1996 season, Nolan was dubbed "Boy Wonder" by the New York media because, at age 37, he appeared destined to be a head coach. He just needed more experience.

He was hired by then-Redskins head coach Norv Turner as defensive coordinator in 1997. Washington was coming off a winning season, and boasted of defense stars such as cornerbacks Chris Dishman and Darrell Green and had signed defensive tackles Dana Stubblefield and Dan Wilkinson.

But in three tumultuous seasons, Nolan went from "Boy Wonder" to "Whipping Boy" for the underachieving team. He was fired after the 1999 season.

He now calls it his most valued coaching experience, and linebacker Derek Smith, who played for Washington at the time, admired Nolan's strength in facing the team's troubles.

In 1998, Nolan's second season, Washington lost its first seven games, and Nolan began calling out players in the film room.

If a player was loafing on a play, Nolan would point him out and ask, "Is that (your best) effort?" Typically the player would say no, and soon Nolan had the defense flying to the ball.

"That's what I admired about him most," Smith said. "He wasn't afraid to call anyone out."

The defense showed improvement by the end of the '99 season, when the team finished 10-6 and won a playoff game.

But Nolan failed to convince owner Dan Snyder, who had an unusual way of communicating. Snyder told the media that Nolan's defenses were "vanilla," and even delivered melting ice cream to Nolan's office to emphasize the point. But Nolan discovered that Snyder was far from a good humored man.

"It happened twice," Nolan said of the ice cream deliveries. The first time, rapidly defrosting gallons of extravagant flavors were placed outside Nolan's office door with a note saying, "No more vanilla."

"I wrote him a note, saying that my kids would enjoy the ice cream and that the advice was well taken," Nolan said. "(I was) thinking he was kidding. Then I found out he wasn't kidding."

When Nolan stayed conservative with his defenses, Snyder went industrial. Nolan showed up one day to find a hand cart parked at his desk with melting 5-gallon drums of ice cream.

Any more questions if Snyder would have delivered the flat screen to Coles?

Haha, that's great! Nolan was pretty pathetic as a defensive coordinator here. While that's not Snyders area to really stick his nose, I still find it funny!

I would like to think it's in the past as well, but not too long ago we had the Coles/TV threat.

At least we're not hearing about him sending Arrington bobbleheads to Williams. I think Snyder would know better than to call out these coaches though.

Yeah, that was a player issue rather than a coaching issue though. Interesting he hasn't said a word about Arrington though, not that I've read anyway.

This is all, of course, assuming this story is true. Nolan is a bum; the fortunate heir to Marvin Lewis' defense in Baltimore which he slowly started to erode to a shadow of its previous greatness. His head was so far up his ass when he was the D coordinator in Washington that he could eat his own pancreas. He's cocky, bitter, snide and immature. Funny how the guys that leave here under Snyder have similar personality traits: Deon, Coles, Nolan just to name a few. I'm more partial to take the side of Dan the Man on this one. I hope he DID send ice cream to "no nothing-nolan". His defenses DID suck donkey.

That's very unprofessional. Honestly, who would want a boss like that? I would have returned the favor and sent him a donkey with a cap that read "ASS" and a envelop with my resignationon in it around its neck.

makes me wonder who actually benched lavar. probably retaliation for renegotiating his contract. make sure he wont be able achieve his bonus.

That was great!

Snyder has always struck me as a "small, small man". No, not talking about stature, but about the type of person he is. For all his wealth, he still reacts like a 5-year old child. He should not be meddling in what his coaches are doing.

The donkey would have been priceless, assuming, of course, that Nolan was ready to resign.

Snyder is in such awe of Gibbs that he wouldn't dare pull anything remotely similar with Gibbs or his staff. I doubt that Snyder even meddles at all and that's great.

I still chuckle during every game, remembering his edict to the networks not to show his owner's box on TV. I think he was filmed once, during the Dallas game, after our two last-minute scores. What a monumental ego to insist that the TV camera not pan his box!

If you had inherited Nolan you would'nt care how you treated him. Whoevers' fault it is, the Nolan years were marked by piss-poor D.
