Web site says Williams on the short list for HC candidates

Profootballtalk.com has listed Greg Williams as being on the short list for head coaching positions, and can anyone argue with that? I know many of you insist the guy is going to stick around and take over from Gibbs, but when you are offered a 2nd chance at a HC position you take it. If he goes, he'll take his assistants with him. If we lose GW we are going to be hurting next year b/c our defense has overachieved as it is.

WILLIAMS GETTING A SECOND CHANCE?

A gruff head coach with less-than-ideal people skills who flamed out in his first NFL head coaching job should have trouble landing another gig, right?

Right -- if a guy named Bill Belichick hadn't turned his own second chance into one of the greatest runs by a head coach in NFL history.

So the thinking in some circles is that Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will eventually get another shot somewhere, when an owner concludes that his three below-average-to-poor years with the Bills don't necessarily translate to failure the next time around.

Williams is a respected coordinator. As a head coach, the thinking is that he lacks the leadership and motivational skills to make a whole team come together. Still, Belichick is no Dale Carnegie -- but Belichick has crafted a system that produces a lot more wins than losses, especially in games that matter.

With a relatively bare cupboard of candidates for all of the jobs that will come open in early 2006, it could be that someone out there takes a leap of faith that Williams could be the next guy to become a coaching star in his second try.

Of course his name is going to pop up this offseason.

He could have jumped last year, but he didn't, and he says he's staying put again this year.

I know of no team that expressed publicly its interest in GW last year. I know he made a statement that he was staying put, but almost everyone says that while still at least listening to offers.

Just because you are on their list does not mean you want the job. Williams is not going anywhere in my opinion. He is receiving great pay for his position, he's happy, he wants to see this through, and when Gibbs leaves he will be our next head coach. Also, he knows that Snyder pays good and he will be with a team that he was instrumental in developing. He also is young and time is on his side.

When the right offer presents itself GW will be gone in a NY minute.

Everyone's favorite analyst says GW should stay in DC

Williams' best plan: Stay put

Williams will be here next year. Honing your skills under a Hall of fame coach like Joe Gibbs is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Williams is no idiot, he knows this as well. He will be here in his current capacity for at least the next season, and it is obvious he should be the heir-apparent when Gibbs does decide to hang it up.

Re: Web site says Williams on the short list for HC candidates

I think Gregg Williams would leave if the right situation presented itself. Question is, will any of the open positions be the "right situation?"

You figure Houston, St. Louis, New Orleans, Oakland, Detroit, Green Bay, Baltimore and Buffalo are the places that might have openings. Which one of those sounds the least bit attractive?

Oakland - Al Davis? No thanks.
Houston - Ugh.
New Orleans - Where are they even going to play?
Green Bay - Not too bad. But the Favre/Rogers headache isn't fun.
Detroit - Ugh.
Baltimore - Not bad, but not great. Good defensive foundation, but no QB at all. And Williams would need offensive support because he's basically a defensive specialist.
Buffalo - Wouldn't take him back.
St. Louis - Not bad. There's an offense in place once Bulger returns.

I think the only place Gregg would consider is the Rams. Should be interesting, but I think he'll end up staying in DC.

Man, Id take the Houston job in a heartbeat. Reggie Bush and Andre Johnson on O, rebuild that O-line, then put Williams in to operate the defense. Plus, as bad as they are, there is nowhere to go but up and low expectations for next year.

But they have NO offensive line. Zilch. If you're Houston you have to consider trading down from the number one spot to pick up more depth. Teams would give up a ton to get Reggie Bush.

Trading out of that spot is easier said than done of course. But I think the Texans have way more problems than can be fixed by drafting Reggie Bush.

Plus Carr is awful.

There are a couple of other possibilities as well. It's still no guarantee that Tice will be back in Minnesota, and Vermeil may decide to retire in KC.

Given, their o-line blows, but ya gotta take Reggie Bush, no matter what. I don't think Carr is that bad, I think its more a product of poor protection than anything else. Plus, several qbs will be on the market (Ramsey) and Ramsey could be had for a 4th or 5th round pick. All things considered, if it was last years draft Id trade down, but this year if you have the No. 1, ya gotta take Reggie Bush I think.

Just because his name is at the top doesn't mean that HE is considering anything. Go back to the last thread about GW. I think he's made it clear he's not going anywhere right now.

Ah yes good point, I forgot about KC. That would seem to be very attractive for a guy like GW. Come in, fix the defense, and just try to keep the offense going. Could be like adding Tony Dungy to the Colts.
