If he is the guy, you extend his contract at the end of the season.
If he is just another Colt McCoy type backup(Colt had a big win yesterday against SEA), you extend him for modest money and draft QBs till you get it right.

Heinicke is an awesome player at $1m per year and I would love to have him as a backup.
I think that, unless he goes off the deep end, you extend him at the end of the season regardless.

Short term, TH needs to continue to improve/work on the following:
- Accuracy
- Decision making
- Playing his role

For the long term, if he's to become a franchise QB, he needs to show he can throw the deep ball (we have way too much talent at receiver to have that limitation) and to be able to put the team on his back when needed.

I'm cautiously optimistic about him right now, I believe he's trending in the right direction, and having a strong running game has been a huge lift for him.

Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke

Thing is with Heineke his situation is weird. Nobody ever heard of him until he came in end of last year. He looked real good. Went through the next offseason as the presumed backup and boom - once again thrown in the fire. After 9 starts he is playing well again.

The ONLY knock on him after the playoff game last year was durability. I kept saying he was being bought in cold and it was contributing to his injuries. Now that he is in rythm/ game shape/ better understanding of the offense durability hasn’t even been uttered once.

If this was a true rookie we would be absolutely ecstatic right now. For all intensive purposes he is one, only he is more mature. You never hear about anything negative with this guy as far as work ethic, or off the field nonsense. If he plays at this level for the rest of the year and stays healthy I see no need to crown him King of the backups. Wouldn’t even be interested in reaching for a quarterback. Take one late if you see promise than draft him …as a backup with potential for starting down the road. But right now Im extremely comfortable with TH.

He's limited, arm talent just isn't there... He is able to make plays though and seems to be clutch so I'll take that over a guy like Cousins who has a solid arm and accurate but usually folds

Not every good quarterback has a cannon. I dont think TH has a noodle arm. I think he definitely needs to continue to work on his mechanics. Will help his deep ball. I don’t think the limitations there are overwhelming.

Yeah I don't get the arm talent comments. Lots of strong arm qbs fail. Seems like TH has the arm when it is needed. Remember Carolina's d was damn good going into the game.

I agree with everything except this.
McLaurin is a legit #1 WR. The rest of the guys are JAGs

Those bums average 2 receptions and under 20 yards game.
There is zero pass catching talent other than McLaurin.

My assumption, when making this comment, is that you'd have a healthy Samuel.

Terry, Samuel, and Logan are receivers that would benefit from deep passes

I can’t wait to see everyone on the field healthy now with TH picking up his play

Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke

Im trying to stay medium w Heinike.

Yesterday was his best pocket passer game imo. Didnt rack up the yards, aided by a run game but he was making quicker on time throws.

There were only a few drop backs where he froze with indecision. For the most part, it seems like we ran the plays in our weekly game plan for the first time this year.

Happy to see Heinike being coachable. I honestly didnt think he would improve his game and thought hed go back and do even more backyard football .. but he hasnt.

Hopefully these past 2 games arent just blips.

Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke

Heinicke is balling right now.

We still absolutely need to draft a QB in 2022. He plays near this level the rest of the season, it doesn't necessarily have to be in the 1st round. But we need a young guy to develop.

Signing Heinicke to 2 years instead of just 1 is looking genius now tho. Glad he is locked up for at least 1 more year. I'd be down with extending him after the season. Especially since any drafted guy would be on a rookie contract.

Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke

Nit pick the guy after a W bc im an asshole .. pulling a haskins and throwing off the back foot unnecessarily.

Had Terry for an easy TD toss with about 4 mins left in the 4th but just back footed it for phantom pressure and threw a bad ball.

Panthers playing at a C level had a chance to win it even though we were playing at a B level.

6 would have been better than 3. And that was a miss. But he played about perfect, including getting us into FG range, before that pass. So I won't hold it against him. Typically though, you gotta have that 1. But defense locked up the W.

Re: Taylor Effing Heinicke

He's balled out the past two weeks against two very good defenses. Not sure what else we can ask at this point.

It's not saying he has to have a cannon but he struggles on throws outside the numbers, but no he's not a bum and I'm getting to drink the koolaid more and more
