I think both the Haynesworth and Hall deals were submitted to the league office before we made the decision to cut Springs. So I'm guessing the 12 million we had was eaten by those two large contracts, but now the Springs release creates another free 6 million dollars.

And it completes my prediction back from January that the Redskins would have to release two veterans in order to be major players in the FA market. Taylor appears safe, but unless we can get a trade for one of our DTs, we'll only be able to bring in one FA lineman plus whoever we use the first round pick on.

Fascinating that we were able to get this done on 12 million... so cutting Springs would def indicate we're gonna give some help to the o-line in FA. I would really like to get Dock and Willis but actually if we have to limit it to a single lineman i want Brown.

GTripp i'm very, very curious how you see our front seven lining up on defense. Who will play the ends? Who will be play OLBs? And... are we still a 4-3 defense for absolutely sure?

Yes, we're absolutely a 4-3 defense. The rest is just speculation at this point.

Haynesworth will start at the nose. Griffin will take the 3 shade. Carter will be the right end. I have no idea who will start at LE. I think Daniels will probably come back at vet minimum, but it's hard for me to see Jason Taylor there as a three down end. We've already made that mistake once...

Fletch in the middle, and I think Rocky will shift over to the strong side. I could see either Blades, or Taylor, or even a draft pick at weak side LB.

Then you have Hall and Rogers at the corners and Landry and Horton at the safeties, and that's pretty straightforward.

I would consider taking Maualuga with the first round pick if we get some free agent help on the OL. Right now, the defenses biggest weakness is the increasing attrition rate with Fletcher's age, and the fact that we are absolutely reliant on getting another 16 game season from him. He's a warrior, but is that a gamble we really should be taking?
