That's kinda my point. If you search some of the old Sean Taylor threads when he got arrested on the aggravated assault charge, I was pretty heated about the whole 'thug' thing. If you're not conditioned or think this way - outstanding!
I think it's more subtle and powerful than we realize.

I'm sure we will continue to better ourselves as people and try even harder to be "politically correct" going forward. I doubt there was any harm meant towards blacks in that comment, it was just a comment and a word was used. The guy is a thug – white/black/yellow. It is what it is.
Well I'm not sure Reskins or Yankees enters into this discussion quite the same way. Simply because neither one always, all the time carry a negative image, unlike the word thug. (I just said I wasn't going to stretch this out!) There is nothing positive or of any redeemable value in that word. Nothing. In fact, it carries a negative connotation.
Yes, we've come a long way! Yes, it's life....I agree! And I'm not getting on anyway in particular. I'm just saying is it possible that we have been conditioned to think a certain way and not know it?

Yeah, it is more powerful than we realize. We're talking about people's perception, which influences their actions and thoughts. The bad thing is, now it is much harder to confront someone about it (because it is subtle, and less obvious).

The English word thug, meaning a violent criminal, comes from the Hindi word thag (and originally from the Sanskrit word sthaga), meaning a thief or villain.
The original Thugs were bands of roving criminals in India who strangled and robbed travellers. Originally these gangs committed murder following precise religious rites to honour Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction.
The crime was known as Thuggee, and although it involved a Hindu goddess, there were Muslim Thugs as well.
In the 19th century Thugs were strangling 40,000 people a year but by then many cases of Thuggee were straightforward robbery with no religious significance.
Looks like the hip-hop culture took it on as their own but I can remember that a thug was just any hoodlum black/white, Jew/Gentile.
In my book Romanowski is a classic thug.
True that, hip-hop culture takes alot of words from India and adopts them for their own. For example the word gully, which basically means a side alley in a city to anyone in India.

dmek25 08-25-2006, 07:02 PM not to stir the pot but i totally disagree with ghettoblahblah. if anything reverse discrimination is running rampet in the good ole US of A. i am personally all about giving jobs to the most qualified applicants. there should never be a conflict because of race, religion or sex in filling a job. nowadays employers are so afraid not to hire a minority over someone else who is actually more qualified that its sickening
