12thMan 01-05-2007, 11:42 AM Detroit could use Clinton Portis. Kevin Jones is a serviceable running back, but I don't know that I would call him "good." I think part of the problem he has is a pretty weak O Line. Also, he's never played 16 games and the past 2 years he's had his seasons cut short. Still, he only ran for 1000+ in his rookie season, since then, he hasn't cracked 700 yards. I think that's a pretty decent indictment of him.
Also, when one of the better running backs in the NFL is perceived to be available, everyone should be showing interest short of San Diego and KC. I'm not really all that surprised by the fact that the Lions would come after him and if I'm Washington, and actually looking to deal Portis, I would have to look twice at Bly and the 2nd overall. Then, they would have filled a need at corner (albeit a relatively old one) and have 2 picks in the top 6. They could shop for those or draft whoever they want.
All that said, I'm gonna be insanely pissed if Clinton Portis gets traded this offseason. I will be irrate and wish I could turn off the love of the team.
Finally, anyone think maybe Clinton rubbed the organization the wrong way with that interview? I don't mind what he said, but maybe Joe Gibbs/Cerrato/Snyder/Saunders did and might be a little more open to trading him than they were before.
One other quick thing, just because Joe Gibbs categorically denied that they're trading Clinton holds very little water with me. He also said, going into the 05(?) draft that "we're gonna go get Patrick Ramsey some weapons" and then they picked Rogers and Campbell.
Yeah, if Gibbs held a presser in ten minutes denying it, I would pay much attention to it.
I find it hard to believe we would trade CP only because of the cap situation. Especially if we're going to can Arch and/or Lloyd.
irish 01-05-2007, 12:01 PM I'd like to see CP traded for draft picks which is what this team really needs to rebuild its foundation.
Schneed10 01-05-2007, 12:03 PM Can someone please give clarification on what kind of salary cap hit we would take if we traded Portis? If we trade him before June 1st - do we have a huge deadcap hit in 2007? If we trade him post June 1st what would be the hits in the followng 2 years?
I just want to know even if the Redskins decided to trade him, can they really afford to do this at all?
The short answer is they could afford it if they really wanted to.
Trading him would hit us with a cap hit of $8.2 million in 2007. He's already on the books for $7.1 million in 2007 as it is, so it wouldn't be that much more to absorb. BUT, the Redskins have no intention of having him count $7.1 million in 2007: they'll restructure (he'll be willing) and give him what his contract calls for. That will reduce his cap number to something like $3 million, so really, the opportunity cost of trading Portis is like $5.2 million or something.
If the 'Skins wanted to make this their major personnel move and not really make many other changes, they'd still be able to get rid of either Archuleta or Lloyd, but probably not both.
I'd say the likelihood of all this happening is something like 0.00001%. Gibbs loves Portis, and with Duckett leaving, we can't just go with Betts as our #1 and have nobody behind him (Rock Cartwright does not count, he is not good enough).

I really doubt it. Gibbs seems to really love Portis and everyone knows he's an outspoken guy who speaks his mind. And it's not like he even said anything bad, he was just speaking the truth.
Schneed10 01-05-2007, 12:05 PM And a trade would never happen post-June 1. First off, the draft would have already happened by then, so any scenario involving picks would be out the window.
Secondly, teams just don't do that. They like to get new guys in the fold earlier so they know what holes they need to fill in FA and the draft.

Only because of the cap situation? So the fact that he's a far more talented than the running back that would be replacing him shouldn't carry any weight in this situation?
But as far as all these trade talks, I'm sure it has been made aware to other teams that Portis is available, and if anyone in the Redskins front office says otherwise, they're lying. It may not have been a direct statement, but I'm sure that it leaked somehow. And with teams throwing 2nd overall picks around, I'm willing to bet that Portis is finished as a Redskin... :banghead:

Of course his talent level, leadership and production are big reasons why to not trade him, I should have said the cap being one the main reasons why we won't trade him.

Thanks Schneed for claification on this. So basically we can rule out any trade with him because we need to have him restrucure to save cap space in 2007.
redsk1 01-05-2007, 12:13 PM Just for discussion, i would hate to see CP go b/c he is one of the "core" guys. It's not going to happen though. This organization has been blasted this year about letting "core" guys go.
Now, all of the overpaying, questionable FO moves the FO makes have left us w/ a severe lack of talent on D, essentially no draft, and no depth on D. With that being said if the skins did this they might be-would be in better shape. They would fill the need in CB. They would be able to get some major young talent on D. W/ the #2 & 6 pick we could keep one trade down into the lower 1st and get a 2nd most likely. 3 top picks for an aging D. Wow. Thoughts?
This of course is w/out taking CAP #'s into account.
