Agreed,

With that said, how juicy does the pot have to get before it's okay to deal him out? Are there any teams that can meet that?

Everything's doable in the NFL - everything. I tell you what I wouldn't do, is basically swap our 6th for 2nd and trade Portis for Bly. No way, no how.

The only way the Skins should do this in my opinion is if someone gives us like two picks, including their first, and a solid player. I mean, we would really have to clearly come out on top for this to work for me.

But I maintain, if Gibbs stood in front of the press on the 5 0'clock news and denied it, it would mean nothing to me.

I really doubt it. Gibbs seems to really love Portis and everyone knows he's an outspoken guy who speaks his mind. And it's not like he even said anything bad, he was just speaking the truth.

Agree he didn't necessarily say anything "bad", but it still isn't good to air the team's dirty laundry in public. That stuff needs to stay in the locker room.

I'm torn on this issue of a Portis trade. It's obvious to me that Betts can be a starter, but is Cartwright a quality backup? I guess if they could work something that would benefit the team in the long run (draft picks, not a drastic salary cap hit, etc.) I'd be for it.

I'm not torn - CP needs to be in the locker room for us to win consistently next year. Whether or not he should be a captain, he is the face of the Skins these days. There has been so much turnover here, I think dealing CP would be too much for the team to bear.

If we trade CP and keep either Lloyd or Archuletta...the earth might open up and swallow FedEx Field. What kind of message would that say to the players? If that happens, we won't win more than 5 games.

See though, the only thing is, Kevin Jones hasn't been that good. He's eclipsed 1000 yards only once. He hit 1133 or something like that in his rookie season and he hasn't gotten to 700 yards the last two, both of which he's ended up injured. I think the Lions might want to go out and get a Clinton Portis, it makes sense to me, why they would want him. However, they need to work on that O Line to open up some holes before they get concerned about the running back situation.

I do, however, agree that trading Dre Bly would probably be a mistake on their part. He's pretty much the only guy that concerns anyone in that defensive backfield. He can play, but he's already 29 and I don't think that the deal makes sense from the Skins standpoint other than the fact that he could be coming with the 2nd overall pick.

All in all, if people are really making offers, I guarantee the Skins are listening and they're certainly not thinking dealing Portis is out of the question. The more I think about it, the more I think his days in Burgundy and Gold are done. And that makes me angry.

So bench a guy that caught 61 balls in 12 games and trade for a guy that played in only 8 and caught only 17 out of the backfield? That doesn't make sense. While Jones has been injured the past two seasons, he is younger and fits more into the Lions offense.

Portis 693 yards (rush / rec in 8 games) 86.6 yards per game with one of the best offensive lines in the game.
Jones 1209 (rush / rec in 12 games) 100.75 yards per game with one of the worst offensive lines in the game.
If you're thinking td's...Portis had 7, Jones had 8.

I'd say that Jones was productive in his system, and one of the few bright spots the Lions have. Again, the Lions would be stupid. Address a real issue, like you said, the OL. You can be the best back in the world, but unless you're Barry Sanders, you need an OL.
I firmly beleive that we will see Portis in a Skins uni next season. (98% sure)

Being from Boston and a huge Red Sox fan, I beleive in having those "clowns / idiots" in the locker room. They lighten up the atmosphere and help people to laugh...Portis is one of those key players!

I just don't get this organization ever...I am pretty sure that Portis won't be traded...but if for some reason he does, we'll be a couple more fan favorite trades away from being the Arizona DC Cardinal-Skins. How much more can the organization expect fans to take?

As someone touched on earlier...

There is no stat to how big portis' value is in the locker room.

Skins can't trade portis, he's too valuable.

Wow! I leave the office for the day, come back and one of the juiciest threads gets started.

If I'm not mistaken KJ's injury is pretty serious. I think they were talking about the same thing happened to another player and it took a full year to recover from. Since KJ's injury happened pretty late in the season the Lions could be up scheisse creek without a paddle.

I'm in the group that says CP is most proably a Redskin in 2007. He is a special back (not a sexy back) and it would take, as someone already said, a "Hershell Walker-type" trade for it to make sense. Think of the merchandising loss the Skins are going to lose by giving up Portis.

I'm also hoping he stays because my friend bought my 1 1/2 year old son a CP jersey, which he'll be able to wear until he's like 6.

Yes, because he doesn't run the football well. They could go with Portis and Jones just like Washington would be doing with Betts and Portis. I'm not saying Jones never has to see the field again. I'm saying Clinton's better.

I'm not buying your argument that Jones is a better option cause he had a better season THIS year. Betts catches a lot of balls out of the backfield too, but Clinton still carried the load.

He managed to get 1 more touchdown than Clinton in 4 more games this season. He also ran for all of 166 more yards. Clinton wasn't even all that active when he was healthy this year. Clinton is a WAY better back. Clinton's also only 1 year older. The only thing Kevin Jones does better than Clinton is catch balls outta the backfield.

If I'm Detroit I don't know that I'd offer Bly and the #2 overall for Clinton, but I would definitely make a run at him. Kevin Jones doesn't stay on the field consistently and he doesn't run nearly as well. He could be a third down guy who can go catch balls or run some draw plays. I mean really, the guy would be a really good #2 back, but I don't even think he's as good as Ladell Betts, let alone Clinton Portis.
