I've been doing this a few years now and there's a few things I've realized about coaching little league football: 1) Playaction doesn't work on little kids. They're not looking for the ball normally, they're just blindly running through holes up the middle hoping the ball carrier goes through one of them. 2) They can't grasp positioning in blocking. Last year I had different blocking schemes and they got too confused. This year I simplified things with the Wishbone and just made them block straight on. 3) Passing plays are tough because kids at that age can't form a pocket or protect the QB for very long. Even with the QB we have, he can't run around in the backfield forever. We need a lot of short routes. I coach kids 11-13, and we had our first practice in pads yesterday and all the leads worked as well as the end-around. We ran the end-around a lot last year and it was a TD half the time. Misdirection DOES seem to work great in this league. TheMalcolmConnection 09-05-2007, 10:36 AM If you like power football then a great set up play would be trips left with a single FB in the back field. Spread out the defense and then run the 42 BLAST at them. If they don't check out of 8,9 in the box, throw the ball to one of the three options on either side. I really like this idea as well. We haven't installed trips yet, but we do have a motion split left and split right. jbcjr14 09-05-2007, 11:21 AM I really like this idea as well. We haven't installed trips yet, but we do have a motion split left and split right. This has helped me in my previous coaching adventures. Spread the field out a bit and if they don't check out of 8-9 in the box, throw a quick slant to a receiver. Next time they see the formation, they WILL check out and then you hit them with the power run up the gut for a big gainer. TheMalcolmConnection 09-05-2007, 11:27 AM Only problem is that I'll REALLY be counting on our offense to get some push up front. The good news is, if the RB makes it to the second level, he's gone. jbcjr14 09-05-2007, 12:01 PM Well, if you run that formation and either run or throw out of it and then run the formation again and do the opposite it WILL work!!! Actually you can switch the trips to either side of the field to really mess them up! Run the middle WR in motion and end around em. There are tons of things off the formation that if the defense doesn't move you can beat them on. GhettoDogAllStars 09-05-2007, 12:24 PM My Dad coaches high school football in Florida. Even those high school kids can't execute a passing offense correctly. I say stick to traps, blasts, powers, and dives -- those are always the most effective for my Dad's team. You mentioned that your kids had trouble with complex blocking schemes, but if you could get just one of them to pull correctly, you could trap your way down to the goal line. We DO have a trap I put in, in the middle of the season. Typically guards can grasp it and they LOVE doing it because they get to blow someone up. AlvinWalton'sNeckBrace 09-05-2007, 03:03 PM I've always wanted to try to coach little league football..I think I could do it for kids a little bit younger than what you're coaching. Above that and they'd be beyond my knowledge base. I always picture myself wearing a full suit with a tie and hat and pounding a game program in my hand!! TheMalcolmConnection 09-05-2007, 03:18 PM I was the only coach to get thrown out of a game last year. :D | |
