SC Skins Fan 02-07-2008, 12:29 PM Schwartz has already extended with the Titans.
Fassel is the only one that makes sense now. Probably the only one that made sense from the time that they installed the staff (the Mariucci connections notwithstanding). I'd say, if you wanted to be fair about the whole thing, a Fassel hiring actually reflects well on Dan Snyder.
Not the 'big splash' pick. Who knows what went down, but I'm going to say that if Snyder had really made the big push for Spagnuolo he probably could have gotten him here. Maybe it will be reported out differently, but as of this moment I'll give Snyder credit for avoiding the erge to jump on the hot assistant (an erge that the fan in me succumbed to) and - assuming that he wasn't just straight up spurred by Spagnuolo - actually shows a level of maturity that I have heretofore not given him credit for having.
It is basically Fassel's staff that is in place, to bring someone else in very well could have proven problematic. Hiring Fassel would also allow them to at least say that hiring the staff was part of a larger plan (to bring in Fassel) rather than just some desire to throw the whole organization into flux for the sake of change. They can at least say that bringing in Spagnuolo was necessary to do their due dilligence, and perhaps to gather some information, but that Fassel was the plan all along barring something really unforseen. In the end Fassel is the logical choice, given the course of events, and Snyder's ability to navigate the hype surrounding Spagnuolo when so many others couldn't, including myself, is a sign of growth. Barring something out of left field (and your next coach of the Washington Redskins ... Pete Carroll!) I'd say a Fassel hire actually redeems Snyder in my eyes at least. My sense is that the feeling has cooled considerably (another credit to Snyder) surrounding Fassel and that his hire won't cause that public outcry that it would have a couple of weeks ago. That being said, if anyone still feels compelled to give up their season tickets as a result, please let me know :)
freddyg12 02-07-2008, 12:29 PM Yea, the Giants were in his ear telling him this wasn't a good situation b/c he wouldn't be able to pick his staff. We don't know that he was offered the job or not though. It's widely laughed at around the league that our staff is already in place before a HC. It's makes this job less attractive to candidates.
Let's get on w/ it and hire somebody. I do like Schwartz too, but i'd settle for Fassel...i guess. I agree though about the search. It's not been a smooth process.
Did we even have a potential HC candidate list prior to JG's leaving? College basketball AD's always have "list" of qualified young coaches to interview if there coach gets a promotion or whatever. VCU actually went above and beyond to bring together young asst coaches so they could get a jump on HC searches b/c they know that they are a mid major. This has produced jeff capel, anthony grant. It really seemed like we didn't do our homework-we didn't have a list.
Meeks is widely thought of as not being ready
Fassel is currently unemployed and can't get a job
Mariucci: we pulled this one out of the bag late in the process
Schwartz i like but as JS said himself to DS..."why are you interviewing me when my mentor is already on your staff"
Spags: Is thought of as being impressive
Anyways, let's make a hire.
Based on what's been reported, I'd have to disagree w/that. Fassel was close to being hired in 04 before Gibbs came back. From the beginning there was a "list," which actually started w/GW, which parallels the VCU e.g. you use (cool btw, I'm an alum). When GW was extended he was given a lot of $ to keep him from going elsewhere & it appeared that he was being groomed as head coach, until a few weeks ago of course.
skinsfan69 02-07-2008, 12:30 PM Right now do you know who would look pretty good? Russ Grimm.
Why not? He's been in the running for a couple of teams. He would have a good staff around him. Why not? It's not going to happen but wonder why he hasn't been interviewed.
But yes, just hire Fassel and get it over with.
There is no way Grimm is going to come here with all of his assistants already picked out for him. Plus he's not going to run a west coast type of system. This whole thing is so f%*ked up.
sandtrapjack 02-07-2008, 12:35 PM Sounds like the Giants tore a page from Jerry Jones. Jones did the same with Garrett.
I am actually glad this happened purely for personal reasons. Dallas offered a job to Dom Capers and Capers seemed to be waiting to see what developed in Washington. If Spags had become the HC, that would have opened a D-Coordiantors job in NY. And Capers and Coughlin go WAY back. Capers surely would have been considered a replacement for Spags had Spags left NY.
Now that he stayed, I am hoping that Capers makes up his mind and comes to Dallas.
Either Fassel or Mooch would be good coaches for Washington. I would lean more towards Mooch simply because he is better at developing young QB's and Campbell could do well under Mooch.
That is unless Snyder calls Dom Capers about the head coaching job in Washington.
jdlea 02-07-2008, 12:36 PM Fassel has been the favorite all along, just hire him and get it over with.
I second that! I haven't been a fan of most of the candidates from the beginning. I don't like the majority of the names I've heard, outside of Meeks, but at this point, I just want it to end. Just make the hire!
SC Skins Fan 02-07-2008, 12:37 PM Sounds like the Giants tore a page from Jerry Jones. Jones did the same with Garrett.
Sounds like the Giants might have been bidding against themselves. From what we know right now the Skins didn't offer Spagnuolo a contract.
freddyg12 02-07-2008, 12:46 PM I have been curious as to what fans reaction would have been to Fassel four years ago, when he was considered a strong candidate prior to Gibbs' return.
I remember when he was mentioned in 04 as a strong candidate. I actually didn't mind the choice at the time. YOu have to remember, he would've replaced spurrier, who was a disaster for this franchise. whereas, now he'll be replacing Gibbs. Tough act to follow.
I think Gibbs' influence on myself & other fans was so deep that it brought back our concept of who the redskins are, in that you could actually associate players & coaches w/the team again. Between 2000-2004, this team's identity was no identity, players & coaches came & went. In that climate, hiring Fassel, an ex-giant, would've not been a big deal. Now, we've actually tasted some continuity & feel like we have a team, so not hiring GW was viewed so negatively.
Like some others have posted, I believe that not hiring GW was the real reason behind the fan reaction more than anit-fassel feelings.
Longtimefan 02-07-2008, 12:55 PM His defense wasn't looking so good when Minn ran them over for 41 points. The Giants defense had some really really bad games. Yeah they got hot when it mattered most but I'd take Greg Williams over this guy anyday of the week. Glad your staying in NY.
I'm inclined to agree, and sometimes we as fans only remember one's latest successes' or failures, and forget what happened in between. If I had to make a choice between Spagnuolo and Williams, it would be Williams by a landslide.
Let's see how much Spagnuolo will be in demand at the completion of his new three year deal in NY.
Ade Jimoh Fan Club 02-07-2008, 12:58 PM I don't have a link yet - but SYNDER IS NOW INTERVIEWING THE ADE FOR HEAD COACH.
So far, public support of this former Redskins superstar has been fantastic. Let's compare him against his competition:
1) Experience. The Ade was the most recent candidate to play in the league. He knows the players, the rules, and the tricks of the trade.
2) Nickname. The Ade edges out Mooch, Fossil, and Spags.
3) Player Impact. Everyone knows that coaches are WAY out of touch with the players these days. The Ade knows how to play all of the video games, knows all the rap songs and knows where all the good strip clubs are. He'll be there at 4AM to drive their drunk asses home so they don't get a DUI. Fossil? He'll be in bed by 9PM.
4) Asst. Coaches. All the other coaches are whining and moaning about how Synder already put the Assistant Coaches in place so they don't get to pick. The Ade could give a crap.
5) $$. The Ade is willing to be Head Coach for $50/season. The difference can be invested in a new Ferris Wheel at 6 flags.
GMScud 02-07-2008, 01:04 PM I think it's funny when people say, "ohhh, the Giants had some awful games, Spags is overrated, their D really wasn't that good, ra ra ra." It was his first year w/ the Giants. He had to implement a new system, and as the season went on their D stepped up HUGE.
That said, I don't really think Spags ever had any intention of leaving the Giants this year anyway. They have a ton of young up and coming players on that team via excellent drafting, they just won a Super Bowl, Coughlin and the rest of the staff is staying intact... Why leave? IMO he interviewed w/ the Skins just to make sure the Giants opened up their wallet. And they did. He's now the highest paid coordinator in football.
If you just won a Super Bowl, have an excellent team coming back next year, and you can get head coach $$ as a coordinator, why leave?
