firstdown 10-05-2010, 03:32 PM Doesn't excuse his lousy approach to practice. Betts and Cartwright made mention of it. He had good years for us, no doubt, but I believe that they would have been even more amazing if there someone behind him that actually would have intimidated him just a little. Sadly, too little too late.
So you think that a guy with 40 some carries in 2 years is now pushing CP.:pffff:

Betts isn't really someone who should be making comments about someone's lousy approach to practice...and that's all I'm going to say about that

I don't ever remember Betts commenting on CP and if he did I'm sure some here would have started a thread on that.

Somebody hit the nail on the head earlier. It was Joe Gibbs' fault that he gave Portis "star treatment", meaning he didnt have to practice, work out, or do anything except just enough.
This year was the first in a long while that Portis had to WORK to keep his job. Larry Johnson and Parker both were pushing him. I dont care what people said.
Portis knew that it was shape up or ship out. Shanahan let him go in Denver because of a salary/holdout threat, and so CP knew he couldnt get away with it again here.
Bottom line is, we are probably seeing Portis final run as a redskin. He is the last piece from the old regime that needs replaced. he wont be here next year due to his salary and the fact that this is his 3rd season in a row where he has missed games due to injury...
Monkeydad 10-05-2010, 03:49 PM Rabach is the final piece to be replaced.

Everything I ever heard or read was that LJ and Parker both were fighting for the job behind CP.

Here's hoping. God Rabach is awful.

You do realize that before stats gets logged, there's talent to be had? If we were to take your ridiculous premise to the extreme, everyone without a consistent stat line sucks and everyone with stats are good, even the retired Jerry Rice. Larry Johnson>Jamaal Charles? In your world, yes.
Torain broke some good runs and showed good vision. Plus, Portis was pulled for him by Shanahan. They may have blamed it on the injury, but knowing Portis, you know that he wasn't going to take this lightly. So hell yeah, Torain pushed him.
Oh, and for those 40 carries, he's averaging 4.6 yards a pop.

LJ was one of those practice wonders. That's why he made the team. The training camp reports always reported him running full speed and finishing runs. He was cut because he wasn't a "gamer". He also displayed a good attitude, like asking to even play against the third-stringers to try and make the team. Obviously, you aren't going to win against this approach unless you adopt it yourself. Portis played in the preseason without a peep. He slimmed down, etc.
You know how Shanahan can bring down the discipline, like with what he did after Cooley's comments. A player who doesn't practice won't play is one of his mantras that he rarely deviates from, as we all know from the Haynesworth affair.
Obviously, that would motivate Portis to run just as hard. NFL Players view each other differently than outsiders. They're a like fraternity. Portis likely had respect for both Parker's and Johnson's track records.

Do you actually have evidence of this? And please don't use the example of not playing in the preseason, because there was good reason for him not playing in preseason after he had gotten injured.
