If the Redskins do release Banks, Banks will undoubtedly pull a Desmond Howard. He will go to another NFL team and be a spectacular all pro at returning kicks and punts.

So what's holding him back here?

No. He won't. I will bet you any amount of money on the matter.

Yea right....I guess our special teams staff is just the worst ever. We should quit and go play badminton.

This oftentimes happens to a Redskins player, where he shows flashes of being good, and then the Redskins release him and he ends up playing better for his new team. Banks has had a few long returns during his two year career, but he hasn't made opposing special teams coaches afraid of him. He has the speed to break a return into either a long gain or a TD every time he fields a punt or kickoff, but for some reason he only does so occasionally.

Happens less often than people believe and why if he only occasionally breaks free for a long gain or TD now do you think he'll go somewhere else and make Devin Hester look like his bitch?

Yeah, I agree - you HAVE to be willing to cut non-performing players, and can't be afraid of them having success later on. Can't afford to hold onto a person that's not performing -- "potential" has never won a Super Bowl. Also, it does not motivate the rest of the team if you tolerate underperforming players.

For every Redskin that has done well when we cut them, I'm sure we can list 20 others that did not. I think of McNabb, Haynesworth, Portis, M.Kelly, D.Thomas (still on special teams), etc... There are also players that performed better when cut from the Patriots, Green Bay, NYG, Ravens -- there's always a risk when you cut a player. And we've picked up guys from other teams like Carriker and Fletcher - as free agents who have outperformed expectations.

Not to mention -- it's not always reflective of bad judgement. Sometimes when the player does well in a different team, it could be the new team runs a system better suited to their skills.

Still say that we evaluate closely Banks again, but cut him if he doesn't perform. Can't afford to waste the roster spot.

Maybe because Banks has potential. Maybe on special teams, a different special teams coach will come up with a blocking scheme that will allow Banks to run for longer gains on punts and kickoffs. Or maybe good fortune may play in Banks favor if the Redskins release and he goes elsewhere and performs better. But I hope Banks remains a Redskin.

Or maybe Banks, fast but not elusive, just isn't that good.
