punch it in 09-23-2012, 07:48 PM I think this type of defense is very dependent upon getting pressure up front. If you don't get pressure up front, you are going to be F'd.
If you look back at the Patriots when they were winning Super Bowls, you noticed their defense was incredible at the point of attack and LBs. It's a main reason why BB hasn't paid huge money to DBs, and a big reason why he let Asante Samuel walk. Vrabel, Seymour, Bruschi, McGinest, Coolvin, Johnson have all been beasts. The only DB to note on those squads is Ty Law, and Harrison was at the end of his career. I've always thought AS was overrated even back in NE. He jumped routes all the time and capitalized.
Right now, we simply aren't getting the pressure we need to up front and it shows.

diehardskin2982 09-23-2012, 07:52 PM It was crazy to think that the secondary put together in the offseason could be anything other than terrible. I love RG3 but the fact that we can't pick up a top corner or Tackle the next two years in the first round hurts. The NFL cap penalty also is really going to hurt us in picking up quality vets to fix this problem... Eff Goodell and Mara.
explain to me why we dug up a retired tackle to backup Trent Williams!?
2 areas (o-line and secondary) in which we needed help last season and still failed to address it!!
why is the medical staff still employed?
Fire Haslett and let Morris run the Defense!
Because 12 hours before free agency started, we were hit with a 35 million dollar salary cap penalty.
diehardskin2982 09-23-2012, 07:58 PM Can we please establish the bootleg game, move the pocket or something other than run the shit out of our QB we spent 3 first round picks on? Just saying
diehardskin2982 09-23-2012, 07:59 PM Teams can't wait to play us... 9 route all day!
NC_Skins 09-23-2012, 08:00 PM I can see that to a certain extent. Who do you think is the weak link? I only ask because we had a ton of sacks last year with essentially the same group.
I personally think it's scheme to be honest with you. In 16 years of coaching, Haz has never coached a top 10 defense if I'm correct. (correction: he's had 1 year out of the 16 that his defense was in top 10) To be fair to Haslett though, it's been 11 years since he's ran the 3-4 in Pittsburgh. He's mostly ran the 4-3 the past decade. It probably is a huge reason why Haslett wasn't Shanny's first choice as DC. I would like to see our DL get more of a push up the middle though, but I understand those guys don't have the size that Haloti Ngata does, but it would be nice. Now, I definitely think we could upgrade at MLB, and I would rather see another versatile OLB instead of Orakpo to be honest with you.
Pittsburgh had the #2 rated defense in the league the year prior to Jim Haslett taking over. The following year, they dropped to #6, then to #12 in 1998, and finally to #11 his final year in 1999.

Agree.....

I think I agree. The only reason I have any pause is because I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it's getting harder and harder. I mean when GW was here, we had Rogers/Hall/etc. and we'd all talk about Hall getting his ass beaten like a drum. I truly don't feel like that's happening as much this scheme is getting beaten. I mean last week, there were receivers running free. This week, the coverage was good, just bad play calls in my opinion.
diehardskin2982 09-23-2012, 08:15 PM how long until we see a "lights-out" try out? Andre Carter round 2? Bring back Kevin Barnes?
Mechanix544 09-23-2012, 08:19 PM If you recall, this defense was around 30th the year before...weve got serious problems with not much hope on defense unless something significant changes, such as scheme, coaching, or talent...and that is hard to change midseason...but in yr 3, we should be holding teams under 20 pts easy...if we did, wed be undefeated. I feel bad for RG3 and all skins fans
If we held opponents under 30 points we'd be undefeated. Not gonna happen. This is by far the worst secondary in the league, and the worst the Redskins defense have looked, maybe ever.
