I said I would be satisfied as long as we played hard and progressed as a team. We did those things yesterday and, so far, I'm satisfied.

There is no doubt that we have a long way to go in some areas and it's going to take two more FA classes, two more draft classes, and a couple other moves of opportunity to become as competitive as we'd all like to be.

Keeping Scot is absolutely critical to our future success. I also want to keep Jay Gruden. He is competent, IMO, and I do not want the offensive players to have to learn another system. I want this system to become automatic to them so we can gain the advantage of having the utmost efficiency in executing our plays.
Agreed.. I actually walked out of the stadium feeling optimistic. Penalties and special teams kept us from a win but we were playing football. Real football. That was a physical game. If this is the foundation we are building on I think we're going to have a very strong team in a year or two. They are further on the curve than I expected. Still see 6-10 this year but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Profootball focus article

Top performers:

RE Jason Hatcher (+4.2)

LG Shawn Lauvao (+2.7)

LT Trent Williams (+2.5)

FB Darrel Young (+2.1)

QB Kirk Cousins and SS Duke Ihenacho (both +1.5)

not bad...Lauvao Ive noticed had a good preseason, great to see him stepping up.

Hatcher was out of his mind yesterday.

I think you may be fooling yourself if you think we have the talent to be a winner. We just don't. I said we are on Step 1 because we have a long way to go.

The progress I saw yesterday was specific to the physical play of the OL and DL, with a nod to the play of the rookies. I was encouraged by yesterday's game because Scot's primary focus this season was on improving the talent on both lines, which I think he has done. We ran the ball and we stopped the run. Those two things are fundamental to success in football. Nevertheless, there is still much work to be done to improve the personnel on this team.

They aren't good enough to overcome alot mistakes yet. The young talent is definately better though.

He never should have made it out of training camp last year when we drafted that FG kicker, who's doing well with the Saints.

I'm guessing I'm in the minority. I've seen posts on this very thread that have said this team is a 6 win team, this team is no better than an 8 win team, and that this team could win 7 games. I'm on a completely different planet with this team. They'll win between 2-4 games because they're a 2-4 win team. The difference between winning three games versus eight games in this league is not about talent. It's about all the things that the culture of this team eschews. A headline in the post today read "Redskins Continue to Make an Art Form of Almost." That's what they do; that's what they've been doing for years, and it's what they did yesterday.

8 win teams don't routinely surrender special teams touchdowns, they don't routinely commit turnovers on critical drives, they don't commit 6 penalties in a string of 8 plays. Yesterday, the Skins did everything they always do. No progression there, in my opinion.
This is a 4-6 win team and the fanbase needs to deal with it. We are a few quality drafts away, as well as a couple free agents. The depth is too thin and you saw when Hall went down Miami went right after Amerson. That was just one example. We can't afford to loose anyone else right now.

I saw plenty of progression. What I really liked was a true commitment to the run game. I think the question is will ownership stay patient enough with Gruden as L's pile up.

The good: The o-line and running game looking good.

The bad: Cousins is still a turnover machine. We failed to make the big plays when we had the chance. Jackson missing time during off season for personal reasons outside of football then pulling his hamstring, doesn't look good on him, and I'm betting he misses at least next weeks game too. Not going for it on 4th and 1 from our 26. Penalties were ridiculous.

The dumpster fire: Special teams is looking like worst in the nfl again. Nothing worse than constantly giving up special teams touchdowns. It never gets fixed.

Re: Good, bad and ugly. Post game reactions vs Dolphins

I wonder whether Preston Smith takes over for Murphy next week. Murphy seemed invisible to me on D, whereas Smith generated the most exciting defensive play we've had in a while. Pot Roast was pretty quiet too -- not a lot of push, although the run D was stout. Paea was quiet too. And I didn't even notice of Jean-Frnacois was on the field. The D line was good against the run, but didn't really push the pocket too much, with the exception of Hatcher on a few plays.

I like the hits I saw from Goldson -- would be happier if he were a step closer to the ball and could break up passes instead of nail the receiver after the catch. The safety for Miami was all over the place -- some guy I had never heard of, but man he is quick.

Ok -- here's something incredible.

Suh + Wake -- combined for 1 tackle and no sacks! If you had told me that we would pull that off before the game, I would have assumed either that one of both of them got hurt or that we win the game.

Thank you, Coach Callahan. That was pretty amazing. Can you do it again next week, please? We promise that after next week, we won't be seeing a pass rush like that for a long time.

Gotta say...Alfmo was just freakin awesome. He really showed me something yesterday
What impresses me most about him is his ability to turn what looks like a loss
or no gain into 3-4 yards.
