The other name on that list that is intriguing is Steve Wilks. Sure he doesn't have the coordinator experience that Bradley or Phillips has, but I will give him his credit for developing Josh Norman. Turning a 5th round pick into a bona-fide shutdown corner isn't an easy task. Thanks for sharing that article Schneed, that is a good read.
Looking back on it, if you were Gruden would you have hired Phillips? The owner already hates you cause you benched his BFF. You bring in a guy who has HC experience, he's an immediate threat to Gruden the minute he walks in the door. Tough call for Gruden. But there were other other guys out there, maybe Eri Mangini or Jim Schwartz.

Now it's coming out that the players didn't even play the defense that Barry was calling...according to Ricky Jean. Shows a total lack of respect. We need a guy in here who the players fear and respect at the same time.

Um, I think he hired Barry before he benched RG3. Barry was hired in the offseason, RG3 wasn't benched until preseason.

Re: Gruden fires defensive coordinator Joe Barry

They should have fired Barry after the GB playoff debacle last year. The message would have been loud and clear that a performance like that is unacceptable. But better a year late than never...

Rex, GW, and Nolan won't be coming back for reasons already stated by others. If Wade is interested (and hungry) I'm all in.

Nah. Was he even a good coordinator? I can't remember. He's been a head coach for over 20 years I think...some success there, but overall pretty average I think.

In my humble opinion, this is one of the top three posts I have ever read on here. At least for the 5 years I have been here.

I hope Gruden hires the best person that's out there, and not one of his Tampa or Cincy buddies.
Even more than his play calling, some personnel decisions by this defensive staff drove me crazy.

Starting with sticking with Cravens at LB.

Among other things, Cooley gave some good reasons for a defensive staff change in his "what went wrong this year?" segment:

Re: Gruden fires defensive coordinator Joe Barry

I'd put my money on the original head hunter. he has ties to the Richie Petitbone tree and my opinion is a good fiery DC who hasn't had the talent in the past but has done a pretty good job.

Indianapolis Colts: Greg Manusky

Re: Gruden fires defensive coordinator Joe Barry

I saw the Barry firing coming, but was also quite pleased to hear that Fewell won't be the DC...horrible job coaching the secondary IMO. Safety play never got better under him.

They really cleaned house...even throwing out the strength guy!

If I was Gruden, you damn well bet I would hire someone that I knew I could work with. There is no way I'd ever want that Ditka/Buddy Ryan drama going on in my club. I'd opt for the Joe Gibbs approach...one team pulling for each other.

But we're all different types & we'll see how it plays out.

At least it's a change that had to be made.

we need a little bit more of this....

In 2014, under Manusky....

The Colts also finished second in the league in third down percentage allowed (33.3%), which was the lowest single-season percentage allowed in team history since 1972. From Weeks 4 through 7, the Colts only allowed one third down conversion in four straight games, marking the longest such streak by an NFL team since 1970.
