We all know that minorities, particularly the Hispanic population, are the fastest growing group within the United States. Issues like gay rights, a woman's right to choose, and the immagration (sp) issue are at the forefront of topics today. The reason these are important, I think, is that some may perceive a minority or a woman candidate as more 'in touch' with these issues, and more apt to approach them with the right mindset.

One thing's for sure, Obama has drawn huge crowds wherever he goes, unlike any other Democrat currently, Hillary included. His first book has been a hit, and his second one is it's way. And as far as raising money, from what I've read, he has the potential to be a cash raising machine. Now if there is any indication, key work indication, of how viable a candidate may be, his ability to raise money is vital.

There are so many things in his favor right now that, in my opinion, he absolute has to make a run at the White House. The chances of him being this hot again in his political career are slim to none.
i hope you're right 12th, i really do. it would be nice to see, but i think the long embedded powers that be here have an influence in this country we can't really fathom.

....And it could very well be Obama's lack of experience that could play to his advantage if he campaigns effectively. The longer one stays in Washington (i.e. Senate), the more likely dirty politics will become attached to that individual. This, in my opinion, will be part of Obama's appeal as he moves further into, what I feel will be, a presidential candicy.

Look, there's no denying that this would be unprecedented by all stretches of the imagination. However, if you look at what this nation has gone through, starting with 9/11, we've seen a string of unprecented events, on the political front and otherwise.

I think what could very well end up happening is that both he and Hillary end up on the same ticket. One being nominated as the Pres. candidate and the other VP.

I'm sorry but what experience did Clinton or Bush have? What we need is independent individual with integrity and initiative. Sadly, everyone who goes to Washington turns into callous, corrupt and conceited coward.

you are talking about career politicians versus a 2-3 year senator. I'm not sure if understanding the way things work in Washington is a plus or minus. the second part of your statement i definitely agree with

Re: Why Barack Obama in 2008!!

Yeah both Bush and Clinton were governors before the oval office, so did have their fair share of politics.

The problem with senators running for president is usually they have a long track record where one can find contradictions(Kerry). If I am not mistaken there has not been a president who was previously a senator in quite some time.

It's not like Obama has only been in politics for two/three years. He has been a state politician since 1996. It's all a mute point though, DNC will do everything possible to make sure he doesn't get out of the primaries.

You're right, Hoo...the last Senator to ascend to the Presidency was JFK. Some from VP, but none straight from the Senate in years.

Many forget the George Jr. wasn't a Governor very long himself before being elected.

I was gonna say since JFK, but I was not sure, and didn't wanna sound like an idiot. I guess high school history paid off.

obama may run as VP with Mark Warner or something, but i think Mark Warner is the most likely to win the democratic presidential ticket, which would be good. hed have a good shot at winning a historically red state in virginia, i think LBJ was the last democrat to win virginia

Ideally that would be great, but the problem with Warner is that he has almost no money compared to Hilary. Even though people may have their opinions about her, she is a figure that everyone knows, and she has alot of connections. I don't remember the figures, but she has collects tons more than any other Democratic Candidate.

Nowadays it really is all about money, more than the candidate. I mean back in the day the DNC heads would sit together and find the candidate with the best image, but doesn't really work like that anymore. I would love to see Warner run, because of southern roots, but I doubt he will make it.
